Jessica (jollybookshelf) Welcome!

I am so happy that you discovered our group. My name is Jessica and I created this group. My boyfriend and I wanted to do something challenging for the new year as well as have a hobby we could share together. I found the 2015 Reading Challenge on PopSugar and knew I had to give it a try! Before you get started, please take some time to read the posts below. Thank you!

Moderators: Jessica & Taylor

Rules: Rules can suck, but we gotta have 'em! You can read them here. They should also be visible when creating a new thread.

Announcements: Recent and relevant announcements are listed on the group's home page. Past announcements are archived here.

Lisa Armitage | 1 comments G'day
New member from just outside Melbourne in The Land of OZ. Nice and sunny here over our Christmas break and lots of reading for me to do on the beach. Thanks for this group. It looks fantastic and will keep me on track during the year. Still trying to decide on a 500 page book. Just finished 'Big Little Lies' but I think it only Had 467 pages :0

message 3: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Welcome Grace! That certainly does sound like a challenge. I'm new to the whole groups thing too!

message 4: by Pedro (new)

Pedro Figueiredo (pedroaugustofigueiredo) I'm new to Goodreads and I saw that Reading Challenge on Pop Sugar through Reedit /r/books. I was looking for something EXACTLY like this group. I don't know if in the end of the year I will be done with all 52 books, but that is just a number.

I'm brazilian and I'm 18 :)

message 5: by Joe (new)

Joe | 1 comments Hello! I'm new to Goodreads but I like it a lot so far, particularly some of the discussion lark that goes on. I was planning on reading more as a sort of New Years resolution, but after seeing this and receiving more books than I know what to do with for Christmas I think I'll give this a go. It could be challenging because I already have lots to read every week as it is, being an ancient history student, but I actually think this could help with academic reading rather than hinder it if done faithfully. Thanks a lot for making this group!

message 6: by Saara (new)

Saara (lamiena) | 32 comments Hullo! I saw (& reblogged) the book challenge on Tumblr, linked the post to a friend, who then apparently found this group and invited me along. :)

I study English and Literature at uni, so I can get a lot of the books down that way. Huzzah for convenience!

Hopefully, I'll succeed with this challenge. I seem to be falling a few books short of my 2014 goal. Good luck and good reading to all of us!

message 7: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Welcome Bikas, Joe, and Saara! We are glad to have you in our group. :)

Bikas: welcome from /r/books!

Joe: it sounds like you'll be busy, but good luck!

Saara: Feel free to link to the group on Tumblr. The more the merrier!

message 8: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra Hi everyone :) I'm Cassie and new to GoodReads! I'm 20, from Canada and a University History/Education student. I already have lots of reading to do for school, but after taking some time during my winter break to read I realised how much I miss reading for pleasure. I'm hoping this challenge will help!

message 9: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Welcome Cassie!! We have a lot of other university students in the group (including me and Taylor!) so you're in great company.

message 10: by Giuliana (new)

Giuliana Matos | 4 comments Hello! I'm Giuliana! I just found this challenge and since I am graduating Law School this year I decided to catch up on non law related books I have stopped reading on my second year by joining you guys! Hopefully this challenge will help me re-acquire the love I had in reading all kinds of books!

message 11: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Welcome Giuliana!

message 12: by Farhana (new)

Farhana Khader (dishkyaon) | 2 comments Hi Miss Moderator! I stopped reading in high school - I'm 24 now and working as a technical writer, always reading boring technical documents. Looking forward to this challenge as a lifestyle-changer and forcing myself to go public with this, so that I don't give up. Cheers!

message 13: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Hey Farhana!! Welcome to the group :)

Yasmina Ra | 74 comments Hello everybody :) I am Yasmina, I am 27 and new to Goodreads! I am looking forward to starting with this challenge! :)

message 15: by Steven (new)

Steven Tackett | 66 comments Hello group! My name is Steven. My wife Kelly has been on goodreads for some time and I decided it is probably time to get on the train and what better way to start than a 1 year challenge to read a lot of books! Good luck good reads!

message 16: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 186 comments Hello everyone! My name is Sarah, not so new to goodreads but this is the first time I have joined a group on here. I saw this Reading Challenge on Pop Sugar and was excited to see that someone had created a group for it on goodreads! I can't wait to do this challenge, I think it will be a lot of fun. :)

I hope the new goodreaders and the older ones will appreciate this challenging adventure :)
Thanks to Jessica who is working hard to give a friendly touch to the group :)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Welcome to the group Sarah and Steven! And thank you Zaz :)

message 19: by Chey (new)

Chey Hey everyone!! I'm new to Goodreads as well and have never read this many books in one year. I'm really excited for the challenge :)

message 20: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Spataro | 2 comments Hello to the group! I am very excited to do this challenge, as I have slacked in the last few years on the amount of books I have read. My goal is to spend less time on the computer and more time reading this year. I work for a children's book publisher and have a one year old so I am looking forward to reading adult books haha.

message 21: by Jenna (new)

Jenna Hi! I am excited to take on this challenge! Except, I will probably read out of order.

message 22: by Robbie (new)

Robbie Antenesse | 4 comments Hey there! I'm gonna attempt this challenge, but I honestly probably won't get far, as I don't read nearly fast enough to keep up with the 1-book-per-week quota plus my meddlesome full-time job prevents me from spending the time I would need to read that much. At any rate, I'm gonna try my hardest and do my best to be at least somewhat active in this group. :)

message 23: by Zaz, Mood Minion (new)

Zaz | 1387 comments Mod
Oh, it's easy to read one book per week, you just have to stop: sleeping, showering and eating :D Of course, having a social life, going on the internet and watching TV is forbidden too :p
Maybe you can try multi-checking (one book for several "weeks")? :)

message 24: by Saara (new)

Saara (lamiena) | 32 comments Zaz, my problem has for some years now been that I spend way too much time on the computer, and usually not even doing anything useful. :D If I cut down on pointless screen-staring and regulate my time better, I should be able to read much more.

message 25: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Dumitrescu (alexandraxiuliana) Hello everybody! ^^
So 2014 was the year I got into reading. Not only in my native language, Romanian, but also English. It's like a new world has opened to me. And when I saw this challenge on 9GAG and then here I said I have to do it. But it's a little-big problem. I'm only 18 and I don't have money to buy most of the books I want to read. I have some of them and I can also borrow some of them. But I hope that I would finish this challenge, because I damn love reading, especially in English.
So, as I said English is not my native language. Therefore there will also some Romanian books on the list. Although, not too many, because to be honest 90% of Romanian books suck.
Oh, and I won't be able to read the books in order because I don't have all of them, so I would read the ones I have or I can borrow first. I hope this it's alright.
I think I will have fun and I wish everybody who is taking this challenge good luck.

Saara > I absolutely don't know what you're talking about with the computer time vortex! Oh wait, didn't I started to read a book 2h ago? Ahem.

Alexandra > ebooks are most of the time cheaper than books and there are sales, so maybe it could fit better on your budget? :)

message 27: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Dumitrescu (alexandraxiuliana) Zaz > Ebooks are not such a bad idea, I think I can download an app to read them on my iPhone during school. But I still prefer reading a physical book. And I'm also a book collector. :D
I wished I had an ebook reader.

Zaz | 1387 comments Mod
Alexandra > I'm a book collector too but only for children books (the ones with the pictures). I use the Kindle app, they have one for computer too. It synchronises books between the devices, so you are always at the right page :) I suppose some other apps do the same.
An ebook reader is useful when you read a lot :)

If you have a school library plan your weeks around it!

message 30: by Biana (new)

Biana This is exactly what I was looking for...only I didn't know it until I got here! I'm looking for a book club online...because my area hasn't been very fruitful for me. This challenge list is AMAZING and I'm so excited that I printed out extra copies to share with others! Oh yes!

Um...my name is Biana...pronounced like Bee-on-a (flower) and I'm 47. I hope that isn't too old because I read all sorts of fun stuff. I'm in the Pacific North West and it's cold and dark here...perfect for curling up with a good book. Or two.

Chat with you all later!!

message 32: by Shawna (new)

Shawna (5hawna) | 2 comments I'm Shawna and live on the OR/WA border. I'm 38, a homeschool mom of four, a blogger & writer, crazy avid reader, and almost any book is fair game.

Saw the challenge on PopSugar via a link on Facebook, wandered here when searching for a group, though I don't normally use groups here on GR.

Wasn't intending to work through the list in order, but can probably manage to do them at least in clusters and not skip around too much. I intend to make [some of] my book choices a bit more "mindful" this year...

I'm generally terrible about keeping track of what I read, but since I got a kindle earlier this year, I've done significantly better. Love how the latest update plays much more nicely with Goodreads.

message 33: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Welcome Shawna!

message 34: by Richard (new)

Richard Lee | 16 comments Hello ~
I'm Richard, 17, about to graduate High School (February please come sooner), I love reading, cooking, and of course, sleeping. I live in South America and am really excited to go through with the challenge and broaden my horizons as currently all the books I have read are YA, or Fiction.
I found this challenge on 9Gag actually (through a friend's share). Hopefully during my free time once I graduate and wait till my University classes start (Fall Semester) I'll be able to move a little bit faster with the challenge :P

message 35: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Welcome Richard :) I hope graduation comes quick for you, too! We are happy to have you in the group with us.

Cait (clickcait) | 480 comments Hi everyone,

I found this challenge the other week and promptly got very excited about it. I love to read and hate not having a book on the go. I do have a habit of just picking up the books that I know I will like or that I have read before so I'm hoping to use this to push me outside of my comfort zone.

About me? I'm 28, live on a small island just off the west coast of Scotland and spend my time, when I've not got my nose in a book, blogging, taking photos, writing, and walking the dog.

Looking forward to getting stuck in, right now I'm browsing through books on my Kindle looking for any that are over 500 pages... I'm leaning towards Emma.

Patricia Passos (pati_r) | 2 comments Hello everyone!
I'm Patricia, 26, Brazilian but currently living in Japan. 2014 was a bit frustrating for me because I didn't have the time to read as much as I wanted to. Hopefully this challenge will give me the courage to do something I've been wanting to do for a long time: reading at lest one book per week. I also need to expand my vocabulary, so I think this will be a great ooportunity.

See you soon!

message 40: by Guy (new)

Guy | 37 comments Hello All,
I'm Guy, I live in Tucson, AZ and have been using Goodreads since 2008 to keep track of my reading. I read about a book a week. I've seen mentions of reading challenges in the past but have never participated. Not sure if I'm disciplined enough to follow the week by week recommendations but am looking forward to seeing how everyone does. Mainly I've just been looking for a good group to share reading experiences with. And my goal for 2015 is to be more thoughtful in my choices of reading material. I have a tendency to be all over the place.

message 41: by Gwendolyn (new)

Gwendolyn Cayad Hi, I'm Gwen from the Philippines. i've been keeping track of the books i have read for the past two years through Goodreads reading challenge but this is the first time i decided to join a reading group. Since i'm new here, i still got to feel my way around but i hope to get to know fellow book enthusiasts who share my love for historical fiction.

Welcome to the group, Richard! It seems like a lot of people are challenging themselves to read outside of their comfort zone this year. You'll be in great company. Although, nothing wrong with a good YA read. I'm about to hit the big 3-0 this year (eek!) and YA is still one of my favorite genres. I struggle some with the contemporary stuff that takes place in high schools, that's not really my bag, but the sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal, etc. books can be great reads. I think YA authors tend to take themselves less seriously. ;) Good luck with all your reading goals this year and congrats on being on the tale end of your high school career.

Christina, welcome aboard! You'll be addicted to GR groups in no time! They're such a great way to meet fellow bookies and discuss. I can't imagine how I ever got along without it, haha.

Welcome Cait! Wow, Scotland? What an absolute dream! I've always wanted to go there. Aren't challenges just the absolute best? If this one wasn't so challenging, I'd probably try to squeeze another challenge or two in this year. I'm eager to push myself into reading things I might otherwise not read and perhaps even discover I have a taste for genres that I didn't expect to.

Patricia, hello and welcome! I felt underwhelmed by my reading progress in 2014 also. Lucky for both of us this challenge came along and with it so many fantastically supportive and encouraging members. I'd wager this is one of the best communities GR has to offer. ;) Good luck with all your goals this new year!

Hello Guy! Welcome! Welcome! If reading week by week with the group is not your cup of tea, that's ok. You'll still be able to discuss as the year progresses and hopefully pick up some ideas/book recommendations for your goal to more thoughtfully make reading selections. That sounds like a challenge in and of itself! Best of luck!

Good to have you with us, Gwen! Welcome to the group and welcome to your first reading group. You picked a great one to start with, everyone I've encountered is so pleasant, helpful, and encouraging. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, so I'm definitely excited to see what you pick up for the challenge this year! Good luck.

message 43: by Cait (new)

Cait (clickcait) | 480 comments Michelle - I'm glad I'm not the only one who was considering other challenges this year. I've decided that this one is more than enough and let's face it, this little group is awesome, I'm not sure I'd enjoy another group as much as this one!

message 44: by Susan (new)

Susan Harding | 35 comments Hi, Happy New Year everyone. Just joined Goodreads this moment after reading the 2015 reading challenge comments. I'm 41 (!) and live just outside London, England.
Initially thought that one book could fall into a few categories and I could cheat a bit that way, in fact another challenge to find a book that ticks off as many boxes as possible. It look as though that's not the case. So, looks like I am looking for a book with over 500 pages.....
I'll definitely need help with some of my selections!
x

message 45: by Cait (new)

Cait (clickcait) | 480 comments Hi Susan, that was what I was planning to do initially when I first read about the PopSugar challenge.

Then I decided it would be cool to read through the books in order on the list, just to challenge myself. And then I found this group and found out that lots of people had had the same crazy idea as me.

There's loads of good suggestions in the Week 1 threads already. I've gone with Jane Austen's Emma and according to my Kindle I'm already 10% of the way through it. If you pick the right book for yourself you'll sail through those 500 pages in no time at all. :-)

message 46: by Susan (new)

Susan Harding | 35 comments Yes, now I have found this group I think it will be good to do them in order, one per category, so I can get ideas from others. There's loads of classics I haven't read so this will be a good opportunity to do so.

message 47: by Cait (new)

Cait (clickcait) | 480 comments Ever since I got my Kindle I've been downloading free classics but I'm not so hot on actually reading them, hehe, so that's part of my aim with this one.

I love looking through everyone else's plans because there'll be a week that you're struggling on, then you see a book someone else has picked and it'll be obvious, or it'll spark you to pick another book you'd forgotten about. :-)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 403 comments Mod
Hello Susan and welcome! Happy New Year to you! GoodReads is fantastic, no doubt you will not regret joining. When I stumbled on the PopSugar Challenge, I had the same idea about doubling up on some of the tasks and had no intention of reading them in order. After I got here, I knew the challenge of doing it week by week with everyone would be much more exciting. I'm glad you'll be joining us! If you need some help with selections, there's a folder here where members have been posting their planned reads for the challenge. There is an abundance of inspiration there! I had my year pretty well mapped out before the group started posting it's intentions and I've already changed two of my selections.

message 49: by Susan (new)

Susan Harding | 35 comments I don't like spending a lot of money of books either so will go for the cheapie options :)

message 50: by Cait (new)

Cait (clickcait) | 480 comments Hi Vanesa. I've only been a member of this group for less than twelve hours but I'm really enjoying all the discussion and suggestions.

Good luck with your challenge. :-)
