Garima | 75 comments I'm currently reading her novel - The God of Small Things and she will definitely grace my reading list of next year too.

Bloodorange (pani_od_angielskiego) | 618 comments I think I must reread The God of Small Things - I think I was too young to understand it the first time.

Abubakar Mehdi | 15 comments Apart from The God of Small Things, do you guys know she's a brilliant essayist and an outstanding journalist too ? I read her columns every now and then and they are excellent. If its allowed, we must read one of her essays or columns too, and maybe discuss them.

Any and all reading format/discussion of female authors is allowed, Abubakar.

I really liked her Broken Republic: Three Essays, which was lent to me by a friend. I'm looking forward to reading more of her once I acquire her works.

Abubakar Mehdi | 15 comments Amazing. Thanks Aubrey.
I have a paperback of The Algebra of Infinite Justice. Its a collection of essays and I expect them to be utterly brilliant. So, if anyone wants, I am totally in for a buddy read.

A brilliant essayist for sure. I read Cost of Living earlier this year which was pretty impressive. Broken Republic or Algebra is on my list next.

Yolande (sirus) I would be able to join for The God of Small Things. I haven't read anything of Roy yet and it sounds fascinating.

Bloodorange (pani_od_angielskiego) | 618 comments Garima, Yolande - would you like to (re)read The God of Small Things towards the end of 2015?

Yolande (sirus) Bloodorange wrote: "Garima, Yolande - would you like to (re)read The God of Small Things towards the end of 2015?"

Yes, that would be a good time for me.

Actually I'm rereading the book right now so I doubt if I want to read it third time around. You guys please go ahead without me.

Bloodorange (pani_od_angielskiego) | 618 comments @Yolande: Great - how about November?

@Garima: I'm sorry, now I see I have misunterstood your first post here. I thought you wish to read The God... again, specifically, not Roy in general.

Well, for my part we don't have to do The God of Small Things. I haven't gotten it yet so I can just get different novel of hers. Or for those who want to reread it, maybe we can read that one and something else.

Bloodorange (pani_od_angielskiego) | 618 comments How about reading The Folded Earth?

message 14: by Garima (new)

Garima | 75 comments Bloodorange wrote: "How about reading The Folded Earth?"

The book is by Anuradha and not Arundhati Roy but thanks for bringing my attention to another writer, Bloodorange. As for Arundhati's books, her collection of essays is the next best bet for us.

Oops. I was browsing library catalogues on my phone, and only noticed that the last vowel is different. Thought it was a filing error. Give me a tiny screen, hold the glasses, and this is what happens;)

Yolande (sirus) I've done a bit of research to see which essay collections I'd be able to get a hold of and I found these:
Field Notes on Democracy - Listening to grasshoppers
Broken Republic
Ordinary Person's Guide to Empire

Then I found some non-fiction books:
Capitalism: A Ghost Story
Public Power in the Age of Empire
and Walking with the Comrades

Traveller (moontravlr) | 736 comments I haven't read her yet, but would be interested in looking around for essays by her.

message 18: by Mosca (new)

Mosca | 19 comments Arundhati Roy has been known to me as a brilliant essayist, journalist, and respected left wing activist for more than 20 years. She spoke nearby--in Santa Fe--during the height of G. W. Bush's Orgies of Imperialism (about 2003 or so). The tickets sold out before I could get any; but I heard her on the local public radio. She's always had a powerful and courageous voice. I've always loved her essays and recorded speeches.

And I hadn't read her fiction until a number of months past when I finally read "The God of Small Things". I, then belatedly, discovered what a superb fiction writer she is. I do hope she renounces her vow to abandon fiction writing; because I would certainly devour any more fiction she would choose bless us with.

Kris (krisrabberman) Roy's essays have been on my to-read list for a while -- would love to join in.

She's working on a novel for sometime so hopefully she'll surprise us sooner than later.

message 21: by Garima (new)

Garima | 75 comments It's clear that we have many takers for Roy's essays but given that some of us have packed reading schedules for initial months, a later date will be more feasible to have a rocking group read.
