Something amazing or really useful?

Zarshal Saeed (zarshalsaeed) | 814 comments I’m reading Maybe You Should Talk To Someone by Lori Gottlieb and its AMAZING! I love it even though I hate self-help book and always stop reading them after a few chapters.
You should definitely give it a try.
Also, you can read The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.

The only two books I’ve liked so far of the self-help category.

Farah Djabour | 3 comments self-help books have a lot of varieties, it's about your problems and interests, I find self-help books that focus on one topic way more helpful.

Ahmad Sirhindi Lucknowi | 4 comments I personally don't like the idea of "self help" books. Yes, I understand the sentiment but not this idea that a whole new genre has to be made regarding "self help".

So actually books that help you help yourself can be anything and it can even be fiction or poetry or philosophy that inspires you.

As Allama Muhammad Iqbal said in a poem:

اے اہلِ نظر ذوقِ نظر خُوب ہے لیکن
جو شے کی حقیقت کو نہ دیکھے، وہ نظر کیا

Therefore what I'm trying to say is that we should try and see the inwardness of things. The real meaning! So if a book says "this is how you will be helped, or "10 ways to do this etc." Then it may not necessarily be the case. In my experience, it has been the books that do not advertise themselves as help books which have helped me in my practical life.

Uzair | 1172 comments Well sure you could find a book that inspires you during your readings but then again you may not.
Personally while I'm reading or even watching a movie I don't often (if ever) go out of my way to find "the meaning" behind something . I guess I read or watch stuff mostly to have fun. It's why i didnt really like Oscar winning movies like Joker or Parasite. It might say alot about society but I'm not here to learn about society , I'm here to have a good time.

As opposed to the book I'm reading now which is specifically self help ( Maybe You talk to Someone) .
since my purpose is actually to gain something from it or better myself I try to gain some insight or learn a lesson from each chapter.

Uzair | 1172 comments A self help book is a bit of a comittment. Wading through 300 to 400 pages of something you may or may not understand or even make sense is less than desirable.
That being said Self Help youtube channels have been of benefit to me.

Jordan Peterson and Better Ideas to a name a few.

Particularly the channel " What I've learnt " since it's less of a abstract "push harder" or "be better" and more practical , science backed plans of action
