I already finished my 500+ novel! I didn't want to get behind. Glad to see you found one on your self, though.
I must finish my current book, a cozy mystery called A CAST-OFF COVEN by Juliet Blackwell, before I start another! Never been able to read more than one at a time.
Finished my last book yesterday evening. Gonna start this book today. Will probably start on my 10 minute break at work (short shift today so that's all I get) but gonna make sure I get in some more reading when I get home, in between packing for a quick trip to my parents & finishing wrapping presents and such. Oh the busyness of Christmas. And I work in retail!
I'm about 28% of the way thru and so far it is ok. It's split up a little odd for me...and occasionally I have minor issues figuring out if they are talking about Locke in his childhood or adulthood but the storyline is going along ether interestingly enough. :-)
This is a very good book. However it is the first of a series and the author is setting the stage for the rest of his books. The novel starts out strong, but I found it slowed down and the first half was hard to get through. There is a lot of background and it's difficult to see how all the different plot lines are related or why they are going on as long as they do.Push through it. Keep reading. It's worth it. When it takes off, the book becomes near impossible to put down. Very much looking forward to reading the second one!
So I am over half way thru and it's gotten a little better. Still have issues sometimes figuring out the time period of sections (cuz they go back & forth between when Locke was a child and then adult). But I find myself wanting to know what is gonna happen which is a good sign. :-)
There was another issue where I could figure out what the deal was with The Gray King. Like where the character had come from. Maybe he was mentioned at some point in the very beginning that I didn't quite catch. But he is a character I kind of want to punch in the face. Lol!
Also, the country the live in can be confusing if I think about it...so I just try not to. Lol!

I know what you mean about the Grey King. If you're a little over half way through, you're not far from where things really take off. As much as the part with his childhood is interesting, I found the jumps came at odd times, and then when you come back to present time there were things that occurred off scene that were then talked about in past tense so it could be a little confusing. That said, the flashbacks do offer some good insight into the motivations and actions of the characters later in the book. The last half of the book redeemed the confusing first part for me, and left me wanting to read the next book.
Alright so I am 3/4 of the way thru this book (thank goodness I started earlier, it's been hard with work getting this book read!) and I'm kinda starting to freak out. Can't begin to figure out how Locke is gonna get out of the mess!!! I really hope I don't stay up too late to read this--I already can't get into bed until midnight! (My hubby works at midnight and if I go to bed before that, he ends up waking me up when he leaves and I get cranky. LOL) And I have church tomorrow morning!!!!
So I stayed up late last night to finish my book for the first week. It actually ended in such a way that I DO want to read the next book. I was still constantly being frustrated by the frequent interjections of, what was to me, unneccesary information on history and architect and such of the (SUPER fictional) country. For me, it didn't add to the story at all. I'm also glad with how it ended because it didn't really leave anything dangling--which frustrates me to no end because sometimes I can't always get to the next book very soon. All in all, not a bad first read!
I really liked it as well. It was nice that all the loose ends were tied up from this story. I think the next book will be more interesting and will have less background information and fewer distractions from the main story because the first book got most of it out of the way. I'm interested to read more about Locke and his group and plan on fitting in the second book somewhere in this challenge.
Really late to join this discussion because I just finished the book today. I agree that the world-building was complicated but I think that was what the interludes were for - to give us a clear idea about this imaginary world so we could understand it better? :D I really loved the book. It was amazing. I'm still shocked that Scott Lynch (view spoiler).
I don't know how to add the spoiler tags....but Laarni, I agree with you, I was surprised as well. At the same time, it made his writing stand out because it kept you on edge and not knowing what would happen next. I just bought the second book of the series and can't wait to get to it a little later in this challenge.
Right? He's so good with his surprises. I can't wait to read the second book too! I'll be editing my reading plan so I can add it. BTW, spoiler tags: <"spoiler"><"/spoiler"> without the quotation marks :D
Thanks for the spoiler tag tip! I'm definitely sold on his series and have already decided I'm slotting in number two for the week with a book with a colour in the title. I might need to figure out how to get book three in this list too.
