Lesley What do you see as Jenneke and Anselma’s purpose in the book? Mantel says Cromwell was reputed to have an illegitimate daughter but I feel it is more than that. Perhaps a glimpse of one of the other lives he could have had? Jenneke as a mirror?

Heather Bathon802 My take is that the fictional Jenneke serves as an early indication that Cromwell is losing a grip on the omniscience he displays in every aspect of his life; he trades in information which he uses to advance his cause. His not knowing he had a daughter seems very unlike him, and perhaps foreshadows his downfall.

Lesley Interesting point. I hadn’t seen that. You’re right, it is unusual for him not to know something. Particularly as others do know and have kept the information from him. She isn’t as impressed with him as he might expect.
