Before there was a Phantom Thief, one boy made a choice.

For as long as he can remember, Gregory’s life has been laid out for him. He’s always known if he passes the testing, he will become a leader in Deadlock like his ancestors before him. But after nearly dying and being saved by a ‘civilian’ and taken in by the man and his family, Gregory starts to wonder if the life he’s been living is really a life at all.

By the time he realizes Deadlock won't just let him walk away, it’s too late and it could cost him everything.

In the end, he only has one choice to make. Finish the testing and return to Deadlock? Or fight for his new life and family?

What do you guys think?

P.D. (pdatkerson) | 68 comments The man seems to follow his gaze and turned toward the snake and squinted at it. “What is that?” he asked.
“Don’t touch it, it’s a Cottonmouth,” Gregory said, grinning as he fell back against the ground. “If that was a living snake, it would have bit you.”
The man gave him a weird smile as he turned back toward him. “Okay… Are you sure you’re alright?”

P.D. (pdatkerson) | 68 comments “I’m trained to be a nurse, not a surgeon, and even then… I’ve just learned the bare minimum,” she said. “I’m not even a certified nurse.”

“It’s a cut leg,” Gregory said. “Not a tumor you have to remove from my brain, you don’t have to be a surgeon or a certified nurse for that matter.”

He glanced out the window and realized it was alright getting dark. If she wasn’t going to help him, he needed to get moving to find a safe place to spend the night and he’d sow his leg up himself in the morning.

I'm starting to like Gregory!

P.D. (pdatkerson) | 68 comments Gregory sighed and rested his head back against the headrest, his mind still working through what he should do next. “I was attacked by a rock,” he finally answered the boy. “It was a nasty little creature.”

The little girl’s jaw dropped and her eyes grew big. “It was alive?”

He fought back a laugh. “Most definitely.”

“Did it have eyes?” the girl asked, jumping up and down.

“Did it have really sharp teeth?” the boy asked.

P.D. (pdatkerson) | 68 comments Gregory was just reaching for one of the rolls, when the boy, Jackson, elbowed him. “We have to bless the food first.”
He drew his hand back and glanced around the table. Why did the food need to be blessed? Did they think the bread and butter needed a little extra help to go to the afterlife or something? Roman was right, religious people were crazy.
Hopefully, they weren’t so crazy that they tried to kill him or something. If that happened, he’d probably find somewhere else to stay until he got his next orders for his testing.
They closed their eyes and bowed their heads. Gregory glanced around and felt awkward. He wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do, and it got even weirder when Jonathan started talking.
