Ellen | 3546 comments Addie Bundren is near death; she knows it and her family knows it. As she lays dying, she watches through the window as her eldest son Chase builds her coffin. Her husband Anse had vowed to her that he would bring her body back to her hometown for burial even though it is a hard several days journey by donkey cart. When Addie passes the family loads her casket into the buckboard to begin the trek but if ever there was a family who epitomized the adage "if it weren't for bad luck we'd have no luck at all, it is the Budrens. Heavy rains have flooded the river, washing out the bridges and leaving the family to make a dangerous crossing in rushing waters. As the days pass during the torturous journey Addie becomes, shall we say, fragrant, causing raised eyebrows and pinched noses wherever the Bundrens pass by. During the trip several family secrets come to light for the reader, if not for the family.

Well, I can't say I will run out and get another Faulkner book any time soon. There were so many phrases that were just not making any sense to me. I understand the gist of the story and it's an interesting one but not one I will ever revisit.
