Ann What books are you reading in this category? What recommendations do you have?

message 2: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (lost_ulalume83) | 8 comments I'm planning on Jane Eyre since I've already read Little Women and Romeo and Juliet and Pride and Prejudice (all books I initially thought about reading and then realized this is to add new books to my list lol). Oh I also thought about Gone with the Wind, which if I think about it I don't think I ever finished so maybe I will still add that to the list haha.

message 3: by Amii (new)

Amii | 37 comments Ohhh never thought of Gone with the Wind!!! That's a good one!

message 4: by Beth (new)

Beth I'm think I'll read Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre. I've never read either of them, and it is about time I did. I figure one for this prompt and one for the 100+ year old book.

message 5: by Tribefan (new)

Tribefan I'm thinking I will read The Princess Bride by William Goldman for this one... I've seen the movie but have never read the book...

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Any other recommendations for this prompt? Definitely not my strongest readers advisory topic.

message 7: by Anne (new)

Anne (texanne) I was thinking of Don Quixote. Wouldn't that be considered a love story?

message 8: by Tris (new)

Tris I'm thinking about reading Persuasion for this prompt. I've already read (and recommend) Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, and Jane Eyre.

message 9: by Kerri (new)

Kerri | 56 comments I'm going to read North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell.

message 10: by Julia (last edited Jan 14, 2015 03:03AM) (new)

Julia (_mj_howard) | 57 comments I read "North and South" by Elizabeth Gaskell. It was on my to read list I had no idea what it was about, and loved it. Mr Thorton is definitely up there with Mr Darcy for me.

message 11: by Mpc (new)

Mpc I'm going to read Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier!

message 12: by Ann (new)

Ann | 1 comments I chose something I hadn't already read from this list: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/9... - A Knight In Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux. I love time travel books and I don't read a lot of books about the Elizabethan era, so it was a good read. I may need to fit North and South in somewhere, too. That's been on my To Read list for awhile.

message 13: by Pandora (new)

Pandora Black (pandora_black) I think i'll read Lord of scoundrels by Loretta Chase !

message 14: by Alycia (new)

Alycia | 65 comments I think I'm going to read Far From the Maddening Crowd by Thomas Hardy. Has anyone read it?

message 15: by Alycia (new)

Alycia | 65 comments Mpc wrote: "I'm going to read Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier!"

Ooh, one of my all-time favorites - good one!

message 16: by Angela (new)

Angela | 19 comments I would like to read my first Jane Austen novel for this prompt. Which one should i pick?I am not an english native speaker but i normally read in english but i unsure if i Should pick the german or english edition of the book.

message 17: by TheCarmanita (new)

TheCarmanita The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. Seen the movie, and this is the perfect inspiration to read the book.

I wouldnt feel too bad. I trudged through Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma, willing myself to like them, convincing myself that they were written well. Eff that mess. I hated them and soon gave up my quest to read all of Jane Austen's books. Read what you like. :)

message 19: by Mpc (new)

Mpc De gustibus :)
But Jane Austen isn't the only romance's author! you'll find your perfect book for this prompt!

message 20: by Mpc (new)

Mpc What classic romance you've already read? :)

message 21: by Mpc (new)

Mpc Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Gone with the wind... I read Rebecca, for this prompt. Someone is reading The Notebook, by Sparks. :)

message 22: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (kiik) | 158 comments I think you can be pretty liberal with the phrasing in the prompts. I read The Princess Bride. There's likely a few classic romance Listopia lists that could give you ideas.

message 23: by Miki Mackennedy (new)

Miki Mackennedy | 20 comments I read Anna Karenina. I read it in high school and hated it. Yup, still not a fan.

message 24: by SabrinaJaleesa (new)

SabrinaJaleesa (readnothingyet) I've decided that I will be reading Atonement for this category. Maybe it's not a classic romance in the strictest sense of the term, but I still think it qualifies quite nicely, as it has this classic romance feel to it. Also, it's been on my to be read list for quite some time, so it's about time I tick it off.

message 25: by Karen (last edited Feb 17, 2015 07:52AM) (new)

Karen O | 2 comments Brianna wrote: "I totally forgot about Anna Karenina! I'm planning on reading this in March & April so I'll totally use that one!"

Great idea! I hadn't thought of that either, and I've been meaning to read Anna Karenina for a long, long time. I'm not a big reader of romances in general, so I was struggling to come up with something for this category. Thanks for the idea!

Michelle Johnson (michellecurates) | 85 comments Miki wrote: "I read Anna Karenina. I read it in high school and hated it. Yup, still not a fan."

Yes, I LOATHE it.

I read Jane Eyre and thoroughly loved it. In my top ten favorite books of all time. *Subject to change at my whims.

message 27: by Belinda (new)

Belinda (belindalt) | 99 comments The Great Gatsby was on a classic romance goodreads list so I am reading that right now since I never have. Anyone else consider this a classic romance?

Jackie | 753 comments Belinda wrote: "The Great Gatsby was on a classic romance goodreads list so I am reading that right now since I never have. Anyone else consider this a classic romance?"

I would count The Great Gatsby as a classic romance. It could also count as having a love triangle.

message 29: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Johnson (michellecurates) | 85 comments I didnt consider it a romance but i could see how some could/would.

It's a good book, regardless.

message 30: by Belinda (new)

Belinda (belindalt) | 99 comments I ended up using The Great Gatsby for book with a love triangle. I will be reading The Princess Bride.

message 31: by Ray (new)

Ray Jordan (rjordan1041) Decided to go with "House of the Seven Gables" since I have that book anyway and I found it on someone else's list.

message 32: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I'm reading Middlemarch. I wonder if that would count? So far, it's not as romantic as JANE EYRE or PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, but there are characters in love.

message 33: by Michelle (new)

I despided Middlemarch and it took me the entire month to read it.

I hope you find it more enjoyable.

message 34: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I'm finding it enjoyable, but I'm really not sure it's a romance.

message 35: by Guylian (new)

Guylian Just finished Alexandre Dumas "Die Kameliendame" (The Lady of the Camellias): Might be my new favorite classic.

message 36: by Alexis (new)

Alexis O (saboknits) | 76 comments I read Jane Eyre and really enjoyed it. Jane is such an interesting character and very well developed. I loved her and hearing her thoughts. I read this book thinking that it would only be a romance, but it has such social commentary that is really pertinent today, despite the fact that the book was written over a century ago.

message 37: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) The Bronte Sisters were very forward thinking. For instance, in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte, she covers the problem of spousal abuse. All three sisters confronted issues that women were not supposed to talk about these things.

Thanks for that. My "to-read" list has shrunk drastically since the beginning of the year before I started this reading challenge, so I'll add that one to my list.

message 39: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Johnson (michellecurates) | 85 comments Ever since I started really using Goodreads my reading list has grown tenfold. I have more books TBR than I will ever read in my lifetime. LOL. But, hey, I'm still gonna try.

another book to add to my list.

Jane is in my top 10 list of favorite books.

AlegnaB † (alegnab) Brianna wrote: "...I've read Pride and Prejudice...and I honestly didn't like (please don't hate me lol). It makes me nervous to read anything else by Jane Austen ..."

There are too many books, and there's too little time in which to read them, so just read what you want to read. We all have different tastes, and no book is right for everyone.

I love most of Jane Austen's books. P&P is my favorite book, and I don't hate you. :-> Emma is my second favorite. I had to read P&P in high school, and I hated it then. I watched the 1995 BBC miniseries when it first aired in the U.S. I loved it, so I decided to revisit the book. I loved it then, and I went on to read JA's other major novels, none of which I had read before. I hated Jane Eyre in high school, but I revisited that again after watching the 1983 BBC production with Timothy Dalton playing Rochester, and I loved it. The book is now one of my favorites. I watched North and South with Richard Armitage a few years ago and loved it. I don't think I had ever before heard of Elizabeth Gaskell. I read the book and loved it, and it became one of my favorites. I had to read Wuthering Heights in high school and hated it. I decided to read that again, thinking that maybe I'd change my mind like I did with other classics, but I still hated it. I watched the 1970 movie with Timothy Dalton playing Heathcliff, but I hated that also. I read Anna Karenina three years ago and didn't like it.

I'm going to read Jane Austen's Persuasion for this prompt. I've already read it a few times, but I received Persuasion: An Annotated Edition for Christmas last year, so I want to read that. I'll listen to the audiobook first, though, because reading the annotations disrupts the flow of the story.

Michelle wrote: "Ever since I started really using Goodreads my reading list has grown tenfold. I have more books TBR than I will ever read in my lifetime...."

I know what you mean. I got a Goodreads account three years ago because I was getting so many free Kindle books and wanted a good way to keep track of them. Then I started adding every book that looked interesting when I browsed the new book section during my weekly visits to the library. Then I started watching my public library's ebooks site and would add books to GR that looked interesting. After I got a new iPod and started downloading eaudios, I started watching my public library's downloadable audiobooks site for books to add to my GR bookshelves. I read a lot, but I keep adding more books that I can read.

Kerryann Franklin | 61 comments I've just finished Emma by Jane Austen. I found it very boring which I'm really disappointed with as I really wanted to like her as I know a lot of people do. it took me weeks to read it

message 42: by Malgorzata (new)

Malgorzata (therealmadmags) | 24 comments Just started on Wuthering Heights - it's been on my to-read list for what seems like forever!

message 43: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments I loved wuthering heights and am a big Austen fan but for this one I just needed to go away from the Victorians because I find them hard to get into with a toddler. I read the scarlet letter. I liked it other than the rambling introduction lol

message 44: by Luella (new)

Luella I was going to do Gone with the Wind but I'm running out of time. I'm thinking of swapping for Love Story

message 45: by Melody (last edited Dec 24, 2015 03:00AM) (new)

Melody | 211 comments Even though I consider it more of an anti-romance or a critique of romances I ended up going with Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet for this prompt. I was originally going to count R&J for a book over 100yrs old and read Cymbeline for this prompt, but towards the end I had to shuffle stuff around in order to make everything fit and this prompt seemed to be the proper place for it, so team Romeo and Juliet it is!!!
