Here's a good resource I found: http://www.bookmarket.com/debutnovels...I'm leaning toward "The Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks
Does Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll count? I know that Carroll had some scientific / mathematical publications and an opera published prior to Alice, but Alice seems to be his first novel.

Great choice. It's a wonderful book. Thank you so much for that link, too!
Here is a good link on debute books by popular female authors http://www.bustle.com/articles/23062-...
I've been wanting to read this one. Now I have a good reason. Junot Diaz's first novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, won the Pulitzer Prize in 2008.
I'm thinking about Slammed for this prompt, I've never read a book by Colleen Hoover but I keep hearing great things about them so I'm looking forward to reading this.
I did Songs of the Humpback Whale by Jodi Picoult. Have always loved her books. This is just as good as her other books.

It wasnt the first thing she wrote but it was her first novel. (And last.) We can interpret these however we want and that's how I did.
I liked it. It was beautifully written. Quick read, too.
I read Anne of Green Gables. Although it might be not very popular now, it was very popular before in Canada and Japan (maybe other countries too?). Now it is a hidden gem of a classic. Definitely recommend.

I just finished The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams for this prompt. It was my book club's pick for June. I kind of hated it but I'm not a big sci fi reader (love movies/TV with sci fi themes ironically).
I read Edith Wharton's first novella, The Touchstone. One decision can mold a man into a completely different person. This novella is all about how his inner turmoil shapes him, maddens him, and how he realizes that he is changed by a decision that he never imagined would impact him so strongly. In the The Touchstone, Edith Wharton beautifully illustrates the conflict Glennard faces in trying to forgive himself.
Mindy wrote: "...I'm leaning toward "The Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks"I thought about using that book until I found out that NS had a book published years before The Notebook. He coauthored Wokini.
I was going to read Mary Higgins Clark's first book, but I changed my mind. I'm now reading C.S. Lewis' first book, Spirits in Bondage: A Cycle of Lyrics, which is a book of poems. It's short, so I'll soon be finished with it.
For this category I read Kevin Kwan's first book "Crazy Rich Asians" (It's really good!). In my opinion he has become quite popular since the release of his second book not too long ago.
I know that she wrote plays beforehand, but would Maya Angelou's first book be considered I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings? That's one I've never read but always wanted to.

I've just started reading Stephen King's "Carrie". Not sure how that happened, but I've never read it before.
For this prompt, I read A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes by Stephen Hawking. Although he had published academic papers before, this was his first book. It definitely lives up to the hype. Even though many of the ideas such as the uncertainty theory and string theory have advanced since the publication of this work, Stephen Hawking's unique and entertaining voice make it definitely worth a read.
