2nd book there are "ice cream monsters", a distant cousin appears with similar but weaker powers. I read the books a few years ago, maybe around 2015-2016.

From the reviews this seems a likely option: Cold Fury by T.M. Goeglein is the first book in the series. A reviewer says that in the next book "These creatures have red pulsing eyes, sexless features, and a blue line for a mouth. Sara has aptly named them Ice Cream Creatures."
