Susan Peek I am trying to find an enjoyable, not-too-heavy novel that depicts life among the Danes and Swedes in the 800's. I love reading young-adult, but any suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks!

Eadweard Frans G. Bengtsson's The Long Ships. You might also enjoy some icelandic sagas.

Anna (annapoo) | 3 comments You could try 'The Whale Road', sorry, can't remember the name of the Author!!! But I've read it so it's in my list of Read books. Alternatively, there are the wonderful Saxon novels by Bernard Cornwell, which deal with the Viking invasions of England in the time of King Alfred the Great ie 800's

Ian Cumpstey | 1 comments The Long Ships was the first thing that sprang to my mind as well. I haven't read it, but I did see it a lot when I was living in Sweden where it seems to be regarded as a bit of a classic.
My only other suggestion for a modern novel that vaguely might fulfil what you are after (it doesn't really, it is set much later, around 1200) would be the Kingdom at the End of the Road by Jan Guillou.
