That is quite a vast field indeed, Susan. There are hundreds of works available, both classic and contemporary. Are you looking for occasional space battles, or outright space wars? I myself prefer more nuanced action rather than unending violence.
One series that I initially liked was the Honor Harrington Series by David Weber, which started with On Basilisk Station
. That book, along with a few sequels, was quite good and had plenty of space battles. Unfortunately, Weber's books then became gradually long, verbial, repititive stories with quite a lot of non-sense in terms of plots and deus-ex-machina outcomes and I then lost interest in him. However, his first 3-4 books are worth a read.

You might look at the Vatta's War series by Elizabeth Moon - it's an oldie but goodie. :) The first book is Trading in Danger. Female protagonist; my hubby and I just listened to the first one and he enjoyed it. Another series I love is the Prince Roger series by David Weber and John Ringo, the first book is March Upcountry. It's pretty much all battles, but has quite a bit of humor. If you want to try an excellent indie author, you could look at M. D. Cooper. He has a LOT of books out, interlocking series, various co-authors; a whole universe. A good starting place is The Intrepid Series, with Outsystem as the first book. Lots of action!
Baen Books publishes a lot of military sf. They offer many ebooks, mostly first in series, for free.Baen Free Library: https://www.baen.com/allbooks/categor...

The King's Bounty by Howard Knight is a military space opera that he might enjoy.https://www.amazon.com/Kings-Bounty-P...
The Red Rising series is a favourite of mine. The first book only takes place on Mars but the characters branch out into space in the rest of the series. There's a fabulous mix of internal dialogue and action and the writing is a bit Homeric in nature. I would highly recommend it!
I am really into Expeditionary Force by Craig Alanson.Columbus Day is the first book (I recommend the audiobook because RC Bray is the best).
Few books by Gordon R. Dickson comes to mind:Soldier Ask Not, and Tactics of Mistake.
