Nan | 3 comments VAGUE SPOILERS AHEAD...

This was a super creative borderline children's/YA book that I first read sometime between 2000-2005. I'm not sure how long it had already been around at the time, but I think it was pretty new so I would guess it was likely published in the late 90s/early 2000s.

The edition I had was a small hardcover (slightly smaller LxW than the Series of Unfortunate Events hardcover books, for reference) with a cream/super light tan sleeve and an image on the front cover of a princess either in a forest or a similar scene. Geared towards late elementary and middle schoolers, it had chapters but was a really simple read and couldn't have been much more than 200 pages long - I'd compare it to the Phantom Tollbooth in terms of reading level/reader ages

The main character is a princess, but instead of the plot being a fairytale story itself it's actually about her life living inside of a fairytale storybook and her relationships/interactions with the other characters when the book is closed - they all travel to different pages and scenes to hang out and rest while they wait for the book to be opened again, and then run to reset their places whenever they feel the book being picked up and about to open. She talks about looking up at the face of the children towering over them while they're reading, and I think there might have been a part where one kid spilled food on the book while reading it and that caused a whole scene?

One of the biggest plot points I remember is that the characters inside the book would start to rust if the book wasn't being read anymore, so when their book was forgotten about for a long time they all started to get sick and fade away.

I feel like I remember so many details, but they've all been totally useless for Google searches! Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

YES! That's it!! I can't believe it, that was so quick!

Thank you so much, I've been trying to figure out the name of that book for weeks now so I could buy it for my niece. You are amazing, and I am so grateful!
