With anger, sadness and fear Evelyn attacked her family. She used her powers to manipulate their minds (a trick she learned from Wanda) But for some reason, it didn't work, the mind trick floated right through them. Evelyn had a realization, but she needed to test out a theory. Evelyn pulled a car key looking gadget from her boot. She pushed the button and threw it at Tony. She had to look away, if the volts knocked him down or out, she did not want to see it. The gadget activated but nothing happened. She tried it again on Natasha, again nothing. She reached for Steve's arm, it wasn't muscular, but it was cold and metallic. Evelyn gave a powerful punch to the face, more powerful than she would of liked but it was enough to see the truth. No blood, no flinching, she went right through him. Terrified she retreated back to where Emma was standing.
"Emma, we need back up, there is no way we can defeat them all on our own, is there a way you could call your friends to come again" Evelyn said
She thought Emma was going to get out a phone like device but instead she pulled her necklace. Not what she was expecting but it worked. With help on the way, Evelyn found the courage to face "Scar".
"Where is my family." Evelyn demanded. The man with the scar turned in her direction not with an answer but with an crooked smile.
"I said, WHERE IS MY FAMILY" Shouting this time, Evelyn could feel anger and sadness rising when the man said
" They are out of the way and soon you will be too."
Evelyn tried to make an advancement toward him, but she was pulled through a portal. She was on lush grass in front of a beautiful house. Emma then asked the question Evelyn was to scared to answer. Hastily she tried to come up with something, a lie, a joke anything to cover up what she was suppose to say. But Evelyn knew since they could tell what was the truth and what wasn't. She went with the truth.
She took a shaky breath in and then told them
"Em, those people we were just fighting, they weren't my family. I didn't know if my theory was right, I had to see if it made any sense. Unfortunately it did." Tears were starting to form in Evelyn's eyes. "They were some sort of machines designed to look like the Avengers, the worst part is, I don't even know where the real ones are." The tears started spilling now, drained from the battle and anger she sat down. Evelyn knew she should be brave and not cry like a baby, but the tears kept coming and there was no stopping them.

"Oh, Evie, I- I don't know what to say. They seemed so real, and of course I thought mundanes- I'm so sorry. We'll find your family. But first, I'm going to see mine." Emma walked over to where Tessa was standing, squeezed her hand, then ran towards the manor. (Here, if you want, we can split. Em's going to go visit Mina, but you, Evie, can ask Tessa about your family, what you can do, etc. If you happen to have anything of your family's, then give it to Tessa or Emma; Shadowhunters and Warlocks all have tracking runes.) The wind blew on Emma's face pleasantly, but nothing could make Emma happier than where she was headed. She flung the doors to the manor open, and ran right into Kit Herondale, Mina's adoptive brother, and Jem Carstairs, Mina's father. She momentarily paused in her quest to get to Mina.
"Hi Kit, Uncle Jem!" Kit looked at her with the expression brothers look at their younger siblings.
"Emma, you're acting 12."
"No I'm not. I always act 16, like I'm supposed to!"
"12."
"16!"
"12!"
"Emma! Kit! Settle down!" Jem ran a hand across his face. "You would think that after six months of not seeing each other, you could at least not bicker. But it's always the same!" Jem remained calm throughout the whole outburst he himself had made, as was his character.
"Sorry Uncle Jem." Emma said, sticking her tounge out at Kit. Jem nodded, and left the room. Kit then whispered in her ear, "You SO act 12."
"And you so DON'T act 23!"
"Do too!"
"Do not!"
"Do too!"
"Do not!'
Kit threw his hands into the air, exasperated. He stomped out of the room. Emma took this as welcome relief, and ran to Mina's room. The door was cracked open, and Emma burst through it. Mina was sitting on her windowsill, reading, as her mother loved to do. She turned when Emma came in, a soft smile brightening her sometimes worried features.
"Emms!" Mina said, putting down her book and walking over, carefully, to where Emma was standing, and giving her a hug.
"Mina! It's so good to see you! How have you been? Of course, Kit seems as intolerable as ever, but Uncle Jem and Aunt Tessa seem to put up with him."
"I've been fine. Mama's been visiting New York, to see Clary and Magnus, and Kit's been trying to train me, but you know I can't . . ."
There was a sad pause.
"Have you been getting better?" Emma asked quietly. Mina silently shook her head.
"You have to!" Emma exclaimed, on the verge of tears.
"You know Mama and Dad have been searching for a cure to whatever I have. So has Magnus, and the whole New York institute. And you've gotten Other Emma and Julian searching the Shadow Markets. I think you're gonna have to give up someday."
"Never."
"When Dad was sick, he had everyone he loved stop searching for the cure to his yin fen addiction. Even Uncle Will."
"I'm a Herondale. Herondales don't give up."
"Uncle Will was a Herondale too. He was your lots-of-greats grandfather. And he didn't give up. He accepted what Dad wanted."
"Are you telling me to give up?"
"I don't know."
There was another pause.
"I couldn't bear to lose you, Mina."

By the time the tears stopped, it was late, she had arrived before sunset but now it was dark as night. Evelyn knew that she had spent enough much time crying, now it was time to do something. Emma had some family business to take care of and the only other person she knew was Tessa, but where was she? Evelyn started wandering the vast corridors of the house. After what felt like hours she finally found her. She remembered what Emma said, that Shadowhunters could track people by objects they possessed, *I hope it will work.* (*inner monologue*)Evelyn gathered up her courage and walked into the room.
There was a charged silence after that statement. Mina looked at her feet, while Emma's glance never wavered.
"I know, Emms, but-"
"There is no but, Mina! I need you, and I would never be whole again if you di- if you d-" Emma kept choking on the word. "If you died."
"We'll all die eventually." was Mina's response.
"Yes, but you could die sooner! So much sooner than everyone else."
"You knew this when you asked me to be your parabatai. And as long as I stay here, safe at Cirenworth, I'll live a full life."
"But what about the travel year we were going to take? We were going to either spend time with other Em or visit the New York Institute and hang with Magnus and Clary! But then you couldn't go, even though you said you would. When I was 11, I thought you'd get better. All the doctors said you'd get better, but you never did. Just because nobody could take out your Inner Eye, you have to stay here, within the wards of Cirenworth. Just because of the paralyzing fear that come over you."
*Flashback*
"Come on, Emmy!" 5-year-old Mina, shouted, dashing around the greenery of the park. Emma shot after her, darting and tackling her, They landed in a bush, wrestling. Suddenly, a pixie flew by.
"Pretty!" Emma cooed, chasing after the faerie, but tripping on her own feet. She turned back to Mina. "Pretty?" Emma asked. Mina's face was white as a sheet, the blood gone from her cheeks. She fell to the ground, hard.
"Minny?"Emma asked quietly, realizing something was wrong. "Minny?" Mina gave no response. Emma toddled off towards her Uncle Jem, who was strolling around the grounds with Aunt Tessa. Emma tugged at the edge of her Uncle Jem's coat. When Jem looked down, amused, Emma pointed. Jem looked towards the figure Emma had pointed at, Mina. He went pale, and ran towards Mina. Tessa followed.
"Call the silent brothers." Tessa said quickly. "And Magnus." Tessa started working her magic, trying to figure out what was wrong with her baby. A blue portal opened up behind them, and out came Magnus, holding Rafe by the hand, with Alec and Max trailing behind him.
"Tessa? What's wrong?"
"Mina-mine." Magnus suddenly had a worried look on his face. He turned to Alec.
"Take the boys on a walk, Alexander. Please." Alec nodded, and grabbed Rafe's hand. Alec and the boys walked off.
"Have you called the Silent Brothers yet?"
Tessa nodded.
"Good. I'll see what I can do."
The next couple of days had been a blur for 5-year-old Emma, because she had seen so many Silent Brothers and so little of Mina. While Mina was in a hospital room, she overheard Magnus and Tessa talking.
" . . . you know we can't remove her Inner Eye."
"What can we do, then?"
"Nothing much. I won't do what I did to Clary again; I won't have another teenage girl mad at me. Jocelyn was enough, but Clary was a force. And you know that eventually, even exposure to anything from the Shadow World might kill her."
"Then what is there to do?"
"As much as I hate to say it, keep her at Cirenworth. I'll increase the wards; nothing will be able to get in without your permission."
"I don't know, Magnus."
The door Emma was leaning on suddenly opened, and Emma stumbled.
"It seems someone was eavesdropping." Magnus said with a worried look on his face.
"Minny?" Emma asked innocently, not understanding what she had heard, as she was only 5.
"Minny will be fine." was Tessa's only response.

Evelyn walked into a small room it looked something like a study only there was less books. She saw Tessa writing something down,
It reminded her of when Tony was working on one of his projects, she smiled at the thought and then remembered why she was there. Not wanting to be rude, she cleared her throat to get Tessa's attention.
"Hey Tessa, I was told that you could find my family, do what ever you need to do , just help me find them." Evelyn said

Emma stumbled out of the flashback, in a daze.
"Do you remember the park?" Mina nodded silently.
"Of course I do. I haven't left the grounds of Cirenworth since, except to go to the Silent City to become your parabatai. And I think you knew, deep down, that I would never get better."
"But you were! Remember that time we were nine? We had decided to go out of the wards, and we saw werewolves fighting! Remember that?"
"I- no."
"But how?"
"I'm not sure."
Emma and Mina both looked at the door at the same time.
"Let's go ask Mom."
"Let's go."
Mina and Emma walked out of the room, hand in hand. The walk to Tessa's study was quite short, as it was near Mina's room, When they went to open the door, they heard Evelyn and Tessa talking.
" . . . I need to find them!" went Evelyn's tearful voice.
"I know, but I don't know what I can do. Wherever your family is, it's heavily warded. The tracking runes of Shadowhunters nor the spells of warlocks can get through. I've tried both."
"But Emma said!"
"I'm sure Emma didn't know about the wards."
There was a pause.
"Miss Tessa?"
"Yes, dear?"
"What happened to Emma?"
Emma stumbled back, away from the door. Mina caught her, looking worried. They shared a look that said, "how did she know?"
"It's not my story to tell." was Tessa's response.
Emma walked into the room, Mina close behind.
"But it is mine." Emma sat down on one of the low chairs, Mina kneeling on the floor beside her, holding her hand. "Let me tell you a story."
" I was seven years old when my parents died. I had been spending a lot of time in England, but we lived in the Atlanta Institute. It was right before summer, when I was about to leave for Cirenworth, to visit the Carstairs. We were best friends even then.
"We were walking to a portal one of the warlocks we were friendly with, Caterina Ragnor, had made for us, when a boy with golden hair and eyes as black as night decided to slit my parents' throat. He looked like so much like Jace, except for his eyes, that it was almost eerie. I watched my parents bleed out and die in front of me.
" 'Who are you?' I asked through my tears, realizing my parents were gone. My response was a knife to the throat. 'Do you know where Clary Fairchild lives?' I was so scared, I told him about the Institute in New York, but how she was taking a vacation, and I didn't know where she was. He gave me a cold gaze, one that reminded me of when I was four and visiting Emma Carstairs, and seeing the eyes of Sebastian Morgenstern Turning Mr. Andrew. He drew the same knife he had used to kill my parents and wiped the blood off on his shirt. 'Call me Janus.' was the only thing he said before stabbing the knife into my shoulder, careful not to kill me, to cause me only unbearable pain. I still have the scar. Janus stood over me, laughing, watching the blood pool out of my arm. He ran right before Caterina came looking for me, and he left the knife he had used to kill my parents, a sort of mocking gesture. Caterina, seeing my parents dead and my wound, called Tessa. She portaled in immediately, and had Magnus portal in to help heal me. That was the day she gave me the heron necklace, so that nothing could happen to me again. We went to the Clave, and they tried to put me in the Nashville Institute because my Aunt Celia would 'find a way to take care of me', but I wanted to live in Cirenworth. The Clave agreed, so that they wouldn't have to do the paperwork. I went to live with the Carstairs, but I did a whole lot of traveling. I had kept the knife Janus had given me, and tried to track him, to no avail. He seemed to just . . . disappear. There's a difference between the blocks of wards against a tracking spell and when the person is simply . . . gone. I was determined I would kill him with the knife he had killed my parents with, but I never found him. And that, my friend, is the story of my childhood, fueled my my anger and my sadness. The wound on my shoulder healed, but it left a scar. The wound in my heart with never heal again."
"Do you remember the park?" Mina nodded silently.

As Emma told the story tears started to form in Evelyn's eyes. Having her parents killed in front of her, being stabbed with the same knife, not knowing where the killer was. There was a long moment of silence before someone spoke.
"My parents were killed too." Evelyn said softly
"They were on a top secret mission for shield, they had run hundreds of missions like this before, it wasn't any different, except this time it was. They were S.H.I.E.L.D's best agents, they knew it was going to be the most dangerous mission but they went anyway. They were somewhere in Europe when something went wrong. They must of not checked the perimeter carefully because, when they looked on their scanners there were people around. lots of them, by the time backup got there it was to late. I was 3 when it happened, they weren't going to put me into a foster care because of my abilities, so they gave me to the Avengers. They raised me, trained me and they are the only family I ever knew. I will do what ever it takes to get my family back." Evelyn paused a moment,
"Emma, did you seem to injure Janus when he attacked"?

"It isn't that he's one of the djinn's robots. There have been stories of a guy that looks like Jace, but has dark eyes. Clary told me about him trying to pretend to be Jace, but it didn't work. We don't know where he came from. He's flesh and blood. When I tried to hit him, he bled red."
"If I can get to the lab, I can run facial recognition on the guy that attacked us in the Infirmity. My only question, is it possible to put your memory of Janus into the database?" Evelyn asked
"You won't recognize him. You see, he lives in an alternate dimension, in Thule. There, Sebastian Morgenstern won the battle of the Burren and the blight killed all the warlocks, save Aunt Tessa here. Emma Carstairs told me about Thule. Since I learned about Thule, I've put away my revenge.Granted, I learned about Thule in 2016, but it's okay. I would recognize Janus anywhere."
"If we can re-run the security footage, maybe we can see if it triggers your memory of him. Ugg, they will be expecting us to head back there. What if we can access it from here, is there a computer lab or something with a screen I can use.?"
"Yes." Tessa said. She led the girls to a room full of computers. She entered in the password, and Evelyn quickly hacked into the security system. They reran through the footage, but Emma was sure Janus hadn't been there. The golden hair and black eyes weren't exactly normal. She expressed her feelings.
"I don't get why you think Janus would be in on this. As Clary told me, he seems more intent on getting to her and helping Ash than anything else. He was probably just tracking me because I was a Shadowhunter and sort of knew Clary."

"Who else do you think would of taken us that night. Nobody else knows of Shadowhunters." Evelyn said
As her fingers danced across the keyboard, she noticed something.
"Emma, have you seen that symbol, before? I already tried reviewing every symbol meaning online and nothing comes up."
As her fingers danced across the keyboard, she noticed something.
"Emma, have you seen that symbol, before? I already tried reviewing every symbol meaning online and nothing comes up."
"Which symbol?" Emma squinted closely at the paper. Suddenly, Emma went chalk white. She turned behind to Mina, and put a hand over her eyes.
"Evelyn, close down all of the computers." The computers shut off. Emma, still keeping her hand over Mina's eyes, whispered in her ear.
"Minny?"
"I'm okay, Em."
"Thank the Angel." The hand came off of Mina's eyes. Mina had fear in them, realizing what could have happened. Emma started talking.
"That's the symbol for a quite famous warlock, Shade Thaddeus. He hasn't been seen in years, and was presumed dead. And he's working with the djinn."

"If he is working with the djinn, he is dangerous. Especially if he is a warlock. So, How do we catch him?" Evelyn said rubbing her hands together.
"I'm not sure. All of his belongings were burned in the same fire he supposedly died in, so we can't track him that way. And there was only one person that we know that he had any contact with . . ." Emma trailed off. Both Tessa and Mina groaned. Mina had been brought up by Magnus's bedtime stories of grumpy Ragnor Fell. He was supposed dead until 2012, when he fought against the Cohort. Tessa glared at Emma.
"Emms, I really don't want to contact Ragnor. I love you a lot, but you know how much . . ." Tessa didn't have to finish.
"That's okay. We'll have Magnus do it."
"He could be busy . . ."
"He always makes time to visit you and Mina."
"You're gone a lot . . ."
"He knows me. Aunt Tessa, come on. Pleeeeeeeeease?"
"I don't know . . ."
"Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease?" Emma added a puppy-dog look that time.
"Oh, fine. But don't get yourself killed. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have made far too many Portals in the past few days, and I haven't been around nearly as long as Magnus. Goodnight, dears." Tessa retired from the room. Mina looked at Emma sadly.
"I thought you would stay for a while."
"I know. I'm sorry, Minny. But we need to save Evelyn's family. And with it, the world."
"Shouldn't you contact the New York or LA Institute?"
"Oh, come on. The Blackthorns, Lighwoods, Jace's line of Herondale, Fairchilds, and Emma's line of Carstairs have had enough adventure. Anyways, Jace likes me - for being his I think very removed sort of niece? - but I don't want to bother him and Clary. And why can't Evelyn and I have an adventure on our own?"
Very softly, Mina whispered, "I want to go with you."
Emma's face fell.
"I know, Minny, but you can't! Not until we can cure the fear in a way that doesn't kill you."
"I haven't left Cirenworth in 12 years. Isn't it time for me to live a little?"
"I'm sorry, Mina. I want you to come with us, I really do, but you're my parabatai." Emma said, patting the rune on her shoulder. "Your life is more valuable to me than mine."
Mina looked defeated.
"I guess this is goodbye for now, then?" Mina asked. Emma nodded, and they both hugged each other tightly.
"I would say good luck, but you won't need it."
"I don't."
There was a pause. Emma and Evelyn turned to leave.
"Hey, Emms?"
"Yes?"
"I know you're not dead, but Ave atque vale. I have a feeling I won't be seeing you for a long time."
Emma nodded, pulled out her phone, and texted Magnus that she was going for a visit. Then she and Evelyn left the safety of Cirenworth behind, and got ready to venture into the unknown.

(FYI We're now going to go to the place 'Magnus's Apartment' in the New York folder, if that's okay with you.)
Emma landed on the ground, but she quickly jumped up and held a dagger up to the attacker, who was-
"Evie? By the Angel, what are you doing here? Trying to get us killed?"
She sighed and helped her friends and aunt up. Tessa brushed the dirt off her skirt.
"Well, after that exciting Portal, we should really get in. I'm sure Mina and Kit will love to see you again. Evie, a pleasure once more."

"Nice to see you too Tessa." She said getting up and turning to Emma. "Your not going through a portal with out me knowing where it leads. Plus I had to snag a churro from the food court"
"You were working on some project," Emma shot back. She sighed and shook her head. "Whatever. Aunt Tessa has some things she wants to talk with us about. Let's head in."
She and Tessa started walking to the manor.
She and Tessa started walking to the manor.
Jax looked around at the place and accidentally knocked a vase off a small table, and it shattered against the floor.
"About that, um, it-." She got cut off by the sound of glass breaking against the floor. Evelyn turned around.
Emma and Tessa whirled around. Emma had to choke back a laugh while Tessa glared at her and Jax.
“You’re lucky that’s not one Ragnor gave me,” she said, shaking her head. “It’s just a plain vase. That I happened to like very much.”
Tessa shook her head.
“Aren’t superhero is supposed to not be clumsy?” she muttered under her breath.

Evelyn let out a smirk seeing it was Jax. "Just be glad we aren't sneaking around this house." She said with a laugh. "Speaking of which, why did Tessa need to talk to us?"
"We- or at least I'm not okay after . . . Frey. But Aunt Tessa knows a lot about grief, and I think that she's gonna be willing to talk to us about it."
Evelyn's mood changed. Hearing the name Frey, caused a rush of emotions. She looked at Emma, "That might be good for us." Her voice choked at the last few words but, maintained a fake smile.
"Yeah. Maybe."
Kit Herondale walked into the room.
"Hey, Em."
"Hi, Kit."
"Back so soon?"
"I'm sure you were glad to see me go." Emma said with a glare.
"Tessa told me what happened," Kit said softly. "I'm very sorry about your friend. It was the same with my father, you know."
"Yeah. Sure." Emma crossed her arms over her chest. "Don't you have someone else to go bother?"
Kit scoffed and walked away. Emma didn't know how to feel.

"Oh, you know. Kit. Christopher Herondale. My cousin but also kind-of-brother. We have some history . . . but it's all good."
She raised an eye brow at Emma. "Okay then............Nice to meet you Em's brother cousin!!!" Evelyn called waving to kit, then turning back to Emma and the group.
Emma grinned. This was good. This was normal. She didn't need to think about a certain dead person. She should be happy.
"Now there's something I haven't seen in a while Em." Evelyn joked. "And I want that smile to last longer than 10 seconds this time. So, where to Tessa?"
Just then Evelyn got a alert on her phone. "What is it Friday?"
"Some one just landed on the Tower with unauthorized access."
"Meaning?"
"They aren't coming up in my data base"
"Great another break in, Emma there has been a break in at the tower, it's probably nothing but I'll have to check. I'll text you what went on and when to open a portal back to Cirenworth."
Tessa opened a portal and Evelyn jumped through.

"What's happening?"
"Aunt Tessa, look!" Emma yelled quickly.
Tessa immediately snapped into action, magic appearing at her fingertips. Emma, though, realizing a fight would be futile, grabbed Tessa and Evelyn and shoved them through the closing Portal Tessa had gone in with. Emma pushed herself towards the last remaining dregs, and Emma, Tessa, and Evelyn were standing on the plush green grass of Cirenworth. Tessa glared down at Emma.
"When," Tessa asked, "Will you stop putting yourself in life or death situations?"
Emma had the grace to look sheepish, but her response was a snarky shrug, which was quite difficult to pull of, as shrugs are not generally snarky in nature. Emma then turned to Evelyn.
"Evie, what were you going to tell me?"
