In a futuristic (dystopian?) USA, scientists have a number of facilities where they conduct experiments on humans, mostly of African descent. One such person is Phoenix, an accelerated human, who is only two years old but looks to be in her forties. One day she starts getting really hot, until she explodes. When she comes back to life a few days later she realizes she was meant to be a weapon, a state of affairs she is not down with. First she tries to escape to Africa, but after a year they find her and bring her back, so she decides to instead destroy as many of the facilities as she can with the help of a few other escapees.
This story was definitely original enough (in terms of protagonists if not plot), but I’m writing this review a few weeks after finishing and I find it didn’t actually make that much of an impression on me. I was somewhat bugged at how much of a Mary-Sue Phoenix was at times. Need to get somewhere fast? Make her sprout wings. Need to escape the bad guys? Make her teleport. And time-travel too, just for fun.
Maybe my opinion would be different if I’d read the book to which this one is a prequel.
