The featured book for August 2020 is The Merciful Crow by Margaret Owen.

This debut novel marks the beginning of an epic fantasy series, where people are sorted into castes at birth... and blessed with magic abilities. The second book in the trilogy, The Faithless Hawk, publishes this summer. The third is expected to go to print in 2021.

What are your expectations for The Merciful Crow? Are you excited to read this book?

I have mixed feelings about this book. High fantasy is not my go-to genre, particularly dark fantasy which feels reminiscent of horror. However, the premise sounds interesting. I particularly like how the book normalizes queer identities.

Forgot (again!) to post first impressions. Though I doubt I could actually call them first impressions, because I read The Merciful Crow last year. I really enjoyed it, and even have The Faithless Hawk on my shelf at home.
