Back in the nineties I read a series of British Detective stories and I cannot remember the author or the titles of any of the books. All I can remember is as follows: I believe the detective's name was Jimmy, when he was suspended he worked on his weed covered garden, he had a sports car - red I think. Possibly set in the Midlands. I believe the author's surname was in the range F to J. I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Gary, I added more plot details to the topic header. (You never know which keyword will be the critical clue in tracking down a book.) Feel free to update it by clicking the small "edit" link after the header. This only works on the full Desktop website - not the Mobile website or app.
Can you describe his partner in the police force?
Did he specialize in certain types of criminal cases?
What's the location (e.g., country, large city like London)?

I think I have found the series, it is I think the DI Charlie Priest books by Stuart Pawson. So my description of Jimmy = Charlie, Midland = Yorkshire, Suspended = Sick Leave. Memory is a wonderful thing. Just off to check the book Limestone Cowboy to confirm.
Here's the Google Books preview of The Picasso Scam, the first book in the Charlie Priest series by Stuart Pawson:
