Is it just me that preferred Alina with the Darkling? I loved Mal but was just more drawn towards the Darkling.

i didn't really liked mal while i was reading the books and i still don't, but i don't like the darkling with alina either. i thought i liked the darkling while i read shadow and bone and the rest of the books, but then i read king of scars and i simply realised how much i actually hated him...

I think it's safe to say everyone got a shock in King of Scars lol

Amelie | 524 comments Although I’ve only read the first book, I can’t imagine Alina presented in a relationship with either of them. But I think I’d prefer her with the Darkling. I feel like the shaded parts of his character just make him more mysterious and intriguing.

Sofia (sofloaf) I shipped Alina and Nikolai, because I hated Mal with my entire soul. Ungrateful idiot.

Mal annoyed me a lot too, especially in the second book when he couldn’t acknowledge Alina’s priorities to help the Grisha. But even though I would have preferred Alina with the Darkling or even Nikolai, I feel like Mal did improve near the end, and a normal life is best for both of them.

Nomad in the North (nomadinthenorth) | 740 comments I feel like I am the lonely oddball who actually (a) was pleased with the endgame ship, and (b) liked Mal. Things got a little muddy in Siege & Storm, but nothing that was unforgivable. His character was definitely best in Ruin & Rising for me.

The Darkling has always creeped me out. He's a great antagonist and villain, but I never understood the appeal of him as a legitimate romantic interest. Alina/Nikolai would have been acceptable...maybe. But I also like the ship we get in King of Scars, so I'm good with how it turned out.
