The Right Stuff - Tom Wolfe - 4 Stars

I read this so long ago I don't remember much, and the movie adaptation rises to the surface. But I did recently read The Astronaut Wives Club which presents the space program from the wives POV, and it included a couple passing mentions about Wolfe hanging around the program, gathering material for this book. Wolfe's description of the Astronaut Wives Club in tea party social terms did not secure him any fans among the wives, even leading one to throw his book across the room.BTW I do not necessarily recommend the Koppel book even though I gave it 3 stars - it was not a bad read but disappointing. Wolfe chronicles the start of NASA, test pilots, the forst trips to space, the space race with Russia, the first two groups of astronauts, and the right stuff.
The stories are amazing and learning about these men that Ive heard their name but dont know much about any of them. The first 7 astronaunts were Scott Carpenter, L. Gordon Cooper Jr., John H. Glenn Jr., Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Walter Schirra Jr., Alan Shepard Jr., and Donald Slayton how they got there, what they went through, and what was expected of them is astounding.
