Winona Public Library Reads discussion

From May 4th to June 5th, join the Winona Community in reading The Second Mountain by David Brooks. Brooks, the bestselling author of The Road to Character, examines what it takes to lead a meaningful life in a self-centered world.

Several activities are happening in conjunction with the book. A panel of local celebrities (Winona Health CEO, Rachelle Schultz; WAPS Superintendent, Annette Freiheit; Winona Interfaith Council Member/WSHS Social Studies Teacher, Dwayne Voegeli; and Bluff Country Co-op Marketing and Owner Services Coordinator, Melissa Gordon) will discuss the book and how they've applied it to their daily lives. Community members can submit questions ahead of time to the panel at https://tinyurl.com/wplsecondmountain. Questions can, also, be asked during the panel. The conversation will take place on Thursday, May 14th at 6 PM via Zoom. Participants must register for the program at winona.lib.mn.us.

Frozen River Film Festival's Frozen Friday showing of The Economics of Happiness was so popular that it's coming back to the library as it relates perfectly to Brooks' thoughts in The Second Mountain. The film describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, government and big business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, people around the world are resisting those policies – and, far from the old institutions of power, they’re starting to forge a very different future. Communities are coming together to rebuild more human-scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm – an economics of localization. Watch the documentary followed by a short discussion on Thursday, May 21st at 5:30 PM via Zoom. Participants must register to receive the Zoom link at winona.lib.mn.us

The final activities are two book discussions. One on Thursday, May 28th at 6 PM and another on Wednesday, June 3rd at 2 PM both will be held via Zoom. All events are free and open to the public. Ninety-six copies of the book will be placed in Little Free Libraries throughout Winona for community members to take and share.
