Ellen (elliearcher) I'll definitely be reading Citizen: An American Lyric this year so if anyone is interested in that, I'd love to do a read.

Kris (krisrabberman) Count me in, Ellie -- I have a copy I've been waiting to read. Any time that works for you is good for me.

Ellen (elliearcher) Maybe February or March? I'm a little overwhelmed by January.

message 5: by Kris (new)

Kris (krisrabberman) How about March?

message 6: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) Actually, March is fine.

Lily (joy1) | 227 comments You saw the announcement yesterday (1/20/15)?

"For the first time in NBCC history a single book has been nominated in two categories: Claudia Rankine’s Citizen: An American Lyric published by Graywolf Press is a nominee in both Poetry and Criticism. 'Claudia Rankine’s Citizen is a book of prose poetry whose inventive composition and topical content invite readers to consider different avenues toward the urgent conversation about race and politics in America. Rankine’s appearance on two separate categories is a testament to her book’s complexity, narrative reach and artistry,' says Rigoberto González, Chair of the Poetry committee."

Ellen (elliearcher) I just finished Citizen: An American Lyric and was blown away. Anybody have a suggestion of what to read next? I can hardly wait. Or maybe I should just read this one again. Such a brilliant, powerful text. Painful and beautiful.

Ellen (elliearcher) I can't edit my comments but since we haven't officially begun this, I'll restrain myself to re-reading this volume and the links given. Sorry and thanks.

On the basis of your comment, the double NBCC nomination, that my library system has only three copies (it is poetry!?), that a friend likes poetry (haven't asked her yet if she knows Rankine), and Adichie's Americanah (sounds like some similar themes/issues), I just ordered a hard copy. It should be in my hands Saturday. I do still prefer poetry in hardcopy, rather than ebook format. And this will now be sharable.

When I ordered Citizen: An American Lyric, Amazon showed some other titles for her that looked interesting. You might check those out, or her Goodreads page here, or your local library. If you do, let us know what you find/chose?
