I have read The Poisonwood Bible and loved it. I own The Lacuna, so would be up for that, and also have heard good things on Flight Behavior
I own The Poisonwood Bible but not read that yet... Watching the thread to see if anything develops around The Lacuna, then.
HiAfter January, I can do any time, but best is after May, just bc the semester will have ended then.
You'll love TPB...I read it on a friend's rec; she was (hopefully still is) an aspiring writer, and said it was so good that she kept missing her subway stop bc she was so engrossed in it. I liked it a lot, as well.
Bloodorange wrote: "Linda, Traveller - do you have any specific time of the year in mind in regards to The Lacuna?"Hmm, I've looked at reviews and it appears to be a long, drawn-out tome, so that gives me a bit of pause... Drat, I should check how much I've got going on in December by now...
I've got the hardback and it's only 500....I can tell you that her style's pretty accessible, if that helps any.
Pity that you guys have already read Poisonwood Bible.Another friend of mine just told me Flight Behaviour is better than Lacuna; but all of that said, the material Lacuna seems to deal with interests me. I am fascinated by Frieda Kahlo, as well as with Aztec culture.
Okay, I'm definitely doing the Poisonwood Bible - now I just need to convince someone to come with me.
I'll join you Traveller. Currently, Doris Lessings Martha Quest has me occupied, but I should be ready for Poisonwood Bible soon. When would you like to start?
Chance wrote: "I'll join you Traveller. Currently, Doris Lessings Martha Quest has me occupied, but I should be ready for Poisonwood Bible soon. When would you like to start?"Hi Chance, great stuff- I'm a bit full myself, so how does June or maybe July sound?

Perfect!
Traveller wrote: "Okay, I'm definitely doing the Poisonwood Bible - now I just need to convince someone to come with me."I'm in, if I manage to borrow it from my library when everyone else is reading.
June/July are v. busy for me, but I could at least read along.
Just checking--is The Lacuna still happening, then, or have we switched to TPB? Or is TPB an addition?
I own The Lacuna, and would like to read it with a group if you decide to read a second Kingsolver book.I feel that The Poisonwood Bible is Barbara Kingsolver's best book, and has many themes that would lead to a good discussion--religion, colonialism, communication, gender roles, twins, etc. I enjoy her writing because she tells a good story, and always makes you think.
Linda wrote: "Just checking--is The Lacuna still happening, then, or have we switched to TPB? Or is TPB an addition?"I think we haven't set a date yet for Lacuna. You mentioned July, I believe, or a later month. Traveller said something about December. I don't even know what to propose, to be honest. Last two weeks of January look good to me, but you said you're busy. Any other ideas? I predict I'll have some extra work in July/ June, so I could read, but slowly, and I wouldn't be able to discuss much. So many books O_o
Oh, I just bit off more than I could chew with January, reading Lessing and Munro, and a challenge with another group (not to mention my real time book club and my job!). So any time after January works for me. I just wasn't certains whether TPB was an addition or was replacing The Lacuna
I'm not sure myself:) if nobody else is interested, I can still read the Lacuna with you, the question is when. Let's see if other people are interested. I think I could do March.
To make things clear, Poisonwood Bible is for July, I think starting around July 1. Of course that doesn't have to influence those who want to read only Lacuna or Lacuna in addition, except that maybe it would be good to read Lacuna at a different time if you were planning to do both...
Linda wrote: "Okay! Count me in!"Great! If no one else joins, we'll discuss it here. If there's more of us interested in The Lacuna, I'll open a separate thread.
"Linda wrote: "Okay! Count me in!"When would you like to start reading The Lacuna in March - would the weekend of 28 February/1 March be OK, or do you prefer starting on Monday, 2 March, or later? Into how any week would you like to split it - 3, 4 weeks? When we decide on that, I'll post info in the March reads thread:)
Any of those works, but I know I'll be gone from March 11-14, and there's a possibility that another trip will be added on, March 16-21. End of March, I could be fully attentive to it.
End of March- beginning of April, and April, are very difficult for me (first there's Easter, and later a few successive weekends of oral examinations). Could you do May?
I've posted the information in the May reads thread (4-31 May. tentatively) and added the book to the bookshelf. If you'd like me to change anything, let me know:)
Since nobody else is interested in the Poisonwood Bible discussion, Chance and I have agreed to remove our planned discussion from the schedule. Too many books, too little time!
I'm ready to read The Lacuna, if you're ready) I've just sent a message to Connie to check if she's interested.I guess we can discuss the book in this thread if there's only two of us, as per group rules.
Okay, can I get one more week? I have to really start Alice Munro, and am two weeks behind. After that, I should be ready to go, bc Flannery O'Connor is one or two stories every 2 weeks!
Linda wrote: "Ok, so is this also nixing "The Lacuna"?"No, no, Poisonwood Bible and Lacuna discussion were never linked to one another. But I guess people are simply too busy to read so much Kingsolver? So Lacuna should hopefully still continue. :)
Linda wrote: "Okay, can I get one more week? I have to really start Alice Munro, and am two weeks behind. After that, I should be ready to go, bc Flannery O'Connor is one or two stories every 2 weeks!"Sorry for the confusion, Linda - by 'ready' I meant 'ready in May', as scheduled (right?). My reading schedule is also very tightly packed at the moment, so I can understand your reaction:)
Work has me reacting to things as if they were tennis balls coming at me--I just hit whatever's in front of me at the moment, and on to the next, without looking too far ahead!
Hi, just checking :) how many of us are interested in The Lacuna? I'll be back after the weekend, but I'm in. I could start a separate thread if there still are at least three of us.
I have it and can start any time (though I did wind up committing to a conference and now have several books to re-read between now and June). But hey, the semester begins to end tomorrow! Yupi!
Bloodorange, I also have The Lacuna and can start it next week. I'm looking forward to another Barbara Kingsolver book--she's one of my favorites.
Yay! Is there a schedule? To avoid spoilers? I could do with that, since I'm reading multiple books. It will force me to budget time.
@ Connie: Yay, so we officially deserve a separate thread for The Lacuna! Here it is:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
@ Linda: I am the schedule machine:) I posted some ideas for the schedule in the thread above, to keep the discussion in one place.
