Okay read two so far. Both very different. A nice tough how the author explains how she came about the stories after.
I wish I had this book might be few months till I get it as need to be careful what I spend on books at the moment
Not bad. Finally out of an abusive marriage. I finally went and phoned women's aid and they helped me see that it was abusive and I wasn't going mad. I feel I can finally breathe. My house if finally looking like a home.
Just finished this was a good collection of stories, i like how they were loosely based on historical events.p.s slowly catching up on the monthly reads :)
I love a true story and I like the way the writer fleshed out a story from a nugget of truth. Which story did you like best or which stories captivated you?
I liked the story of Jumbo and his keeper, I liked the way it was written as if he was talking to the elephant. But I did find all of them had something that drew you into it.
I guess for me was the war one where they went raping women. Made me fell very uncomfortable but was the story that stuck in my mind.
I liked the one with the girl given up to adoptive parents. Amazing how her details still in the public record, but she never found out her own background.
I liked all the above and yes the war story will stay with me. I thought the story of the middle class lady with her gentleman visitors was interesting. Nice to know Charles Dickens helped people to have second chances. The story of the couple immigrating was so sad and spoke of love and practicality I thought. The man dying was worried about his wife but he knew she would have to marry again and keep going.
I think the one where he was dying and thinking of his wife was second or the adoptive one. My favourite has to be Jumbo. Such a sweet story but a sad ending for the elephant.
Just read the first story (jumbo) and I see what you all talking about it was a lovely story
Might do one more later

Finished this after I got back from work. I didn't like a couple of the stories in the middle, but the rest I found good.I really enjoyed jumbo and the couple who wrote to each other from across the sea.
There was some dark ones in there that made me feel uncomfortable but the same two stories seems to be everyone's favourite.
Finally got around to reading this. I was convinced i would hate it, but actually found it was really good. I had no idea it was historical fiction, which i like and the twist of the true facts at the end of each story i loved. My favourite was the new york rich guy who died to be found to have been a woman all along - astonished that was true!
