And although the author is from SA, and I live here, I CANNOT find a local copy...Thinking of hitting UCT's library...
Wow, that's a bit of a pain. I managed to get a copy on Amazon marketplace. It's a bit battered and well-thumbed, but I feel it adds character. What annoys me is how reliant I am on Amazon for books these days :(
He was born in South Africa, but has lived in Australia for years and is now an Aussie although SA claim him every time he receives an accolade.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._M._Co...
So I got hold of a copy. Started this week.Coetzee sets his central character up in such a way that I cannot feel any empathy toward him at all. He makesmy skin creep.
Although I really would like to read this, having never read any Coetzee before, I don't think I will get to this one this month...
I'm also finding it quite hard to empathise with David Lurie at this (early) stage. I had a lecturer once that was just as slimy around female students. I'll be interested to see what happens as the story progresses though.
