This is the place for introductions! Get to know your fellow book club members. What books do you love? And what do you do when you're not reading?

Hello everyone! Welcome to this lovely celebration of literary love :) I'm Dayeanne, your co-moderator and video guide. I absolutely love books - though I admittedly read less and less as adult life takes over - but here is a list of my favorite books through the years: Ella Enchanted, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, The Giver, The Harry Potter Series, Pride & Prejudice, Tale of Two Cities, Jane Eyre, The Art of Loving & Tiny Beautiful Things... That's probably enough for now. When not reading I am pursuing a career in acting, working on my fashion blog, or entertaining children at birthday parties. Sometimes I sing with my ukulele, but most times I'm stuck in LA traffic. I can't wait to explore all these books with you!

xx

Hi guys! I'm your co-moderator Felicity Disco. You may know me as assistant to author Maureen Johnson. I hate having to pick favorite books, but some of my all-time favorite classics include Anne of Green Gables, Emma, Persuasion, Jane Eyre, Little Women, A Tale of Two Cities, and Ballet Shoes. Some of my favorite contemporary authors (aside from Maureen, of course!) are John Le Carre, Jane Haddam, J.K. Rowling, Sarah Rees Brennan, and Holly Black. I read a lot of history, YA, and mysteries, but I'm trying to branch out!

When I'm not reading or working for Maureen I'm probably knitting, writing, baking, or working at my day job that I actually enjoy but is kind of boring to talk about.

I'm so excited to talk about books with all of you!

xoxo, Felicity

message 4: by Robin (new)

Robin Epley | 1 comments Hi! I'm Robin, sometimes known as the R half of Drunk Austen across various social media platforms.

I enjoy crocheting, old movies and writing, but when I'm not doing any of those things, I am *of course* reading! My favorite books vary, and I'm usually reading a variety of chick lit mixed in with classic favorites, like Jane Eyre, anything by Jane Austen, and I'm a particular fan of Wilkie Collins! A few modern favorites include Bill Bryson, Julia Quinn, and the Harry Potter series.

I'm kind of weird, I think, in the way that I love books and reading, but I don't form attachments to specific genres or authors... But I'm always open to a good recommendation!

In particular, I'm really looking forward to reading some Russian literature though, as I've never really gotten into it, and I know Rory was a huge fan!

I can't wait for this to get started!

Gillian (frizzbiscuit) Hello hello! I'm Gillian, but I go by Frizzbiscuit on YouTube and most of my other social media.

I'm a Mass Communication student from Australia and most of my spare time is spent marathoning books and TV series, tumbling down tumblr and baking cookies (much to the joy of my family).

My favourite books I read growing up are the Harry Potter series, the Chronicles of Narnia, Pride and Prejudice and The Secret Garden, but my two most recent fantasy addictions are The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson and The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss.

I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into some of those classics that have been sitting on my bookshelf for years that I haven't got around to reading yet. Thanks for starting this group!!

message 6: by Swati (new)

Swati Hegde (missswatihegde) Hi, book lovers!I'm Swati, an eighteen-year-old business student from India, although my dream career would probably involve writing or blogging (or both!)

My favourite books include the Harry Potter series; The Hunger Games series; Pride and Prejudice; The Bell Jar (by Sylvia Plath); Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock (by Matthew Quick); and Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

I write young adult romantic comedy novels, although none of them are published, and I also have a blog where I write book/movie reviews, daily updates, philosophical ramblings and general fangirl posts.

I've already read Emma (and only recently finished a rewatch of Emma Approved), so I'm going to jump right into the discussions.

Swati

PS: Happy New Year to all of you! :)

LouLouReads | 5 comments Hello book people! I'm Hannah, but here & on twitter I go by LouLouReads. I'm a PhD student/nurse from England.

Some of my favourite books include Middlemarch, Bridget Jones' Diary, the Miss Marple books, the Lord of the Rings, and the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books. I also recently read Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier for the first time, and I'm currently reading the Harry Potter books; both are likely to make it onto my forever-favourites list :-)

I'm looking forward to this, especially this month. I'm always thought of Emma as my least favourite Austen, so I'm looking forward to hearing what other people have to say and maybe getting a new perspective :-)

Maiju | 8 comments Hello book lovers! I'm Maiju and you can find me on various social media as mayusteapot. I'm a Finnish book enthusiast and studied English philology, literature and translation, Modern Finnish and Intercultural Communications at Uni.

I love literature. Good literature. It's a land I like to travel and I don't even mind reading the occasional 'bad' book. Favourite authors are Neil Gaiman, Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, Marie Brennan, L.M. Montgomery... Just really not possible to name them all, check out my favourites shelf :)

Such a wonderful idea, this group! I'm bad at deciding what to read next. And it's nice to step outside the academic analysis of familiar classics as well, so I am hoping for passionate opinions and new points of view.

Maiju

message 9: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 1 comments Hi Everyone! I'm RosemaryAubry on Twitter & LakeLonely on YouTube. Never joined a book club until November. Now I attend a YA (adults members) group, a mystery group and my friends asked me to create one (sticking with contemporary settings for now).

I'm turning 50 in April, Gilmore Girls while I was aware of it didn't make my extensive (read as: to much) TV watching list. I've seen the lists of books mentioned/shown in the show and they always make me curious. I'm excited to see what happens here.

Favorite children's books include The Velveteen Rabbit, James & the Giant Peach, and Julie & the Wolves. Teenage years mostly required reading and a bit of Stephen King. Have read Harry Potter series over & over. Pride & Prejudice only three times, each better than the last. Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series is a favorite. Love anything by Kate Atkinson.

This past year was mostly about YA, including Maureen Johnson, and read over 20 books. Want to give a go at mixing it up more (hence the various clubs). Excited to get started with you all.

Rose

message 10: by Monica (new)

Monica Fumarolo (mfumarolo) Hello all! I'm Monica and I was so excited when I saw this book club was happening on YouTube! I'm a professional nerd, especially when it comes to books. Seriously. I have my BA in English, my MS in library and information science (yes, library school is a real thing and it's awesome!), and I currently work as a high school librarian. Naturally as a result of this, I read a lot of YA, but I've been wanting to branch out for a while now. As a fan of Gilmore Girls, I was always impressed by Rory's reading list, so this group is a great merging of a lot of things I love. Woot woot!

When I'm not reading, I'm writing, trying to learn guitar, attempting to draw more than stick figures, traveling, and making videos for my YouTube channel, monielynn5 :)

message 11: by Breana (new)

Breana (lolzcakey) | 1 comments Hi guys! I'm Breana and am super excited to be part of an actual book club (even if it is a virtual one:).

As a kid I really liked the Inheritance Cycle (i.e. the Eragon books), the Harry Potter Series, the Fablehaven series, Swiss Family Robinson, and a smidge of A Series of Unfortunate Events- all books I still like. More recently, I'm really into fiction set in WWI (and my favorite of these is Rilla of Ingleside- I could read that one over and over again), finally sort of finished Series of Unfortunate Events, and this past year, I've almost become a Jane Austen addict. Besides that I read a lot of classic books (well, pre 20th century) to the point that my dad sometimes kindly suggests I read something "a bit more contemporary".

Other than that, I like social media probably more than I should, cooking but especially baking, writing, watching Youtube and making some of my own videos, and just generally trying to figure out this crazy thing called life.

message 12: by Carmen (new)

Carmen Coto Hi, fellow readers! :) I'm so excited to be here!

My name is Carmen, I'm from Caracas, Venezuela, and I'm an occasional Literature student, and an enthusiast for books, languages, watercolor painting and graphic design.

My favorite book for a long time has been The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde. I enjoy Oscar's work, Jane Austen's books, Anna Akhmatova's poetry, and a lot of other authors. Right now I've just finished reading Malala Youszafzai's autobiography and Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki And His Years Of Pilgrimage, by Haruki Murakami and both left me speechless.

The first book I read was Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone, when I was 6 years-old. I read it under the covers long past my bedtime using a flashlight. I have never stopped enjoying literature ever since.

message 13: by Erin (last edited Jan 02, 2015 07:55PM) (new)

Erin Banks | 1 comments Oh my! So many posts from awesome people already! I am super excited about this book club, because one of my generic goals this year is to read more, because I love reading, but have gotten out of the habit in recent years...

I'm Erin, I currently live in West LA, work in Santa Monica... but am still technically a resident of Nashville, TN and my entire family lives in Atlanta, where I grew up. When not reading, I am a critical care nurse, and enjoy knitting (I've been able to knit and read on a few occasions, though that gets a bit complicated handling pages and needles), watch and obsess over literary webseries, watch a lot of other serial media (tv shows) and in general try to have fun living life, hanging out with friends, etc.

Reading.... well one of my beloved childhood books was A Little Princess. I also adored the Boxcar Children books growing up. I read Where The Red Fern Grows and sobbed and sobbed and then wiped my tears only to pick the book back up and sob some more. My very first 5 paragraph essay ever was on Tuck Everlasting. I also read The Giver in 6th grade, and it has never left me.

Harry Potter basically defined and shaped my life, and I anxiously anticipated every new book and would hard core analyze them in Harry's Forums, my very first venture into internet-based discussions, friend groups, and fandoms.

I also was really into author Lurlene McDaniel's "death books" (where basically every book involves someone with cancer falling in love and dying) and actually... they probably had a huge impact on what first made me really think about nursing as a profession.... this is also why John Green's The Fault In Our Stars was so important to me, because it was a great foil to those books from my childhood, and really presented the realism of what dying looks like, which I so needed once I actually became a nurse and started witnessing the dying process regularly.

I adored things like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series and The Princess Diaries series. I also secretly devoured the Flowers in the Attic series in high school...

In high school, I most remember 1984, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Things Fall Apart as books that really affected me.

C.S. Lewis has also had a great impact on me- Til We Have Faces caught me completely by surprise and every time I think about it I want to reread it. The Great Divorce I've devoured multiple times in one sitting. I've read all of the Narnia series more than once.... The Magician's Nephew and The Horse and His Boy are two particular favorites of the set.

Oh, and A Wrinkle In Time and subsequent books... actually, I'm realizing as I'm typing this that I have a chronic illness they currently think is caused by mitochondrial dysfunction and I'm having a moment. OMG AM I CHARLES WALLACE IS THE DARKNESS OVER ME OMG I NEED TO REREAD THESE BOOKS AH

Okay, as you can see, I really really love books. And I hate that I haven't been reading many recently. There are so many I want to read, but also so many I want to reread. I'm hoping to be much better at actually opening books and starting this year.

message 14: by Angela (new)

Angela Hi all - I'm Angela. I live and work in the SF Bay Area as a CPA. My two favorite pastimes are reading and TV (I'm all about the TV series). Over the past three years, my "reading" has become audio books in the car because I'm a road warrior.

My favorite books are Scandinavian crime novels, which all started with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (of course). I love the books by Lars Kepler and Jussi Adler-Olsen. I also very much enjoy classics, having started with Jane Eyre and moving into Jane Austen.

This group came at a good time for me as I'm currently rewatching Gilmore Girls. When this show first came out, I aspired to be Rory... sigh. Now I get to read like her :)

message 15: by Angela (new)

Angela Sullivan | 1 comments Hey y'all, I'm Angela!
I am currently in Chicago (where I grew up), but live in Nashville most of the time for college at Lipscomb University. Actually, I'll be spending February through April/May living in London!

Growing up I was (and am) obsessed with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories as well as anything Alice in Wonderland related. Starting at the beginning of high school, I became quite attached to Jane Austen.
I read my first Harry Potter book in 1st grade and have been hooked since then! HP was my very first fandom experience and it truly shaped me.

My favorite adult fiction book of all time and the book I use to recommend to anyone because it has some of the best storytelling I've ever encountered is "Cutting for Stone" by Abraham Verghese. If you finish a book club book early, I highly suggest going for this one. Close follow-up for most recc-ed (and unique in the fact that I suggest the person have time to immediately re-read it for...reasons) is All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren. Words so beautifully woven that as soon as I can come up with the money they are to be the first tattooed on my body.

I simply love YA and John Green and Maureen Johnson have been a big part of that.

I really enjoy that a lot of the books Rory mentions are classics because apart from good ol' Jane and a little Dostoyevsky, I haven't read many of them! My English classes in high school focused a lot on modern literature.

Anyhow, I made my Goodreads goal for this year 75 books soooo this will help keep me on track to make sure I never fully forget that there's something I can be reading!

message 16: by Lieselotte (new)

Lieselotte | 14 comments Hello everyone!

My name is Lieselotte and I'm a 21 year old bio engineering student from Belgium.

Ever since I was a little girl I loved to read. Unfortunately since starting university, I can't read the same amount of books as when I was 12 years old.

My all time favorite book series include Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, A Song of Ice and Fire and a series of unfortunate events. And I'm not even going to try to name a few favorite books since that would be to hard. So I'll only mention some of my favorite writers: Jane Austen, EM Forster, Nancy Mitford, the Brontë sisters Paulo Giordani and so many more.

I wanted to join this book club because Rory's list is just so overwhelming that I didn't want to start reading all of the books on my own and have no one to discuss them with.

That was about it and I'm looking forward to this whole new experience :)

Love, Lieselotte

message 17: by Kim (last edited Jan 03, 2015 10:42PM) (new)

Kim Hello! I'm Kim. I started reading when I was three, and I've never really stopped. I try to read a mix of books, meaning that there's a lot of British literature, YA and fantasy on my shelves. Some favourites include Harry Potter, The Lumatere Chronicles, The Colours of Madeleine trilogy, The Raven Cycle, The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender, Dreamblood duology, and The Golem and the Djinni, Anne of Green Gables, Little Women and North & South. Favourite authors include Jane Austen (all of her books are on my favourites shelf and I like to have an annual Austen reread) and the Brontë sisters (I love Anne's prose but I think Villette is my favourite Brontë novel - it changes). I also recently started getting into Virginia Woolf!

I joined this book club because Rory has some A+ taste in books and discussing books with others helps me organise my thoughts a little better! Also, I find Russian literature a little intimidating, not going to lie (good ol' Dostoyevsky).

When I'm not reading, you can find me on a stage - I recently finished up playing Mary Bennet in a production of Pride and Prejudice (I have an audition for Jane Eyre soon, fingers crossed!).

message 19: by Mercy (new)

Mercy (mercyavila) | 1 comments Hi! I'm Mercy.

I live in Southern California. You can find me at Disneyland about once a week. I'm usually taking pictures of shows and characters obsessively.

I've never watched Gilmore Girls, but one of my goals for 2015 was to read more so this seemed fun.

My favorite books when I was younger were the Disney Fairies series & The Chronicles of Narnia. More recently, I've been reading a lot of YA. (Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Divergent, The Giver)
Oh, I've also never read Harry Potter.

When I'm not at Disneyland, I'm probably on social media, watching my favorite tv shows, or trying to figure out what to do with my life.

Happy New Year everyone and happy reading!

message 20: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (next12exits) | 2 comments Hello :) I'm Rach (or next12exits on all social media) and I'm from Australia.

I've been a bit of a bookworm most of my life but since I started working in TV a couple of years ago, I haven't had much time for reading - I hope this book club will help me make some time for something I love again.

I'm also a huge Jane Austen fan ... I think I own about 6 copies of Pride and Prejudice, 2 copies of Emma, and one of every other Austen book! (Unabridged!)I read a lot of YA fiction, as well as fantasy, and since I am a huge Gilmore Girls fan, I'm really looking forward to working my way through Rory's reading list :)

Looking forward to chatting with you all!

message 21: by Bianca (new)

Bianca (bookhoarding) | 1 comments I'm Bianca, the "B" half of Drunk Austen. I currently live in Central California, but have grasshoppered from the LA to the Bay Area over the last two years.

I adore Gilmore Girls and just got my grandma hooked on it too (victory!). I'm a major Jess fan, but that's mostly because he was Rory's reading equal.

I can't really pick favorite books easily. I love the wit and sass of Jane Austen, the escape of Neil Gaiman and Sarah Addison Allen. John Steinbeck is a great journo turned fiction author. I adore Norah Efron, Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak for laughs. Caitlin Moran's 'How to be a Women' changed my life. Hemingway is so carefully concise it makes me weep. I could go on...

I read (and write) the news for a living, so it's all fair game to me.

message 22: by Rebeca (new)

Rebeca | 3 comments Hey, I'm Rebeca! From what I read so far I think I'm the youngest here, I'm 15 years old...

It's my first time in a book club, I'm from Brazil and I love to read (obviously)! I'm so glad the first book we're reading is Emma, definitely one of my favorite books! I try to read all kinds of books, but I do prefer the romantic ones!

When I'm not reading, I'm probably at the beach or at church (and at school unfortunely)

XO, Reb.

message 23: by Kaye (last edited Jan 08, 2015 10:35AM) (new)

Kaye Barton (kayeu) | 1 comments Helloooo!

I'm Kaye (kayeu on Twitter & Tumblr). Glad to be here!

A little bit about me and books:

First "on-my-own" read:
Goodnight Moon, at age 4. I only know this because my mom likes to talk about it. Oh, moms.

Favorite children's book:
The Van Gogh Cafe by Cynthia Rylant. I still reread this every once in awhile. It sits on my shelf next to my taped-up copy of Goodnight Moon ^_^

Favorite series:
Harry Potter (though many other series have been well-loved since). This will always be my favorite series because it was the first time I anticipated new releases, interacted with other fans, voraciously reread and deeply analyzed a story. It was my first true fandom experience, and my first literary love. I even created an HP trivia website around the same time as Mugglenet, but when I saw how awesome THEY were I gave it up! ;D

Favorite historical fiction:
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (got this one in an informal book exchange...was supposed to pass it on but I COULDN'T. I loved it too much.)

Favorite Austen: Emma!
Already read, plus read along with Emma Approved, so I'll be re-skimming/jumping into discussion!

Favorite Shakespeare:
Much Ado About Nothing (runner up: The Merchant of Venice; I was Portia in a production in college!)

Favorite dystopian novel:
1984 (with a bonus fave short story: The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. Look that one up!)

Favorite "required reading":
Tie between Gatsby and Animal Farm. First read because of class, but only the first time ;)

Favorite YA that I actually read as a young adult:
Catalyst by Laurie Halse Anderson. I related to Kate so much. More so now, I think.

Most anticipated new release:
The Shadow Cabinet by Maureen Johnson. It's been preordered on Kindle since LAST February. AHH.

That's probably enough...haha. TOO MANY TO NAME.

When I'm not reading, I'm working, cooking (trying to), hanging out with my fiance and/or our cats, tweeting a lot, or stressing out about which book to start. I have an irrational fear of starting a book and not liking it when there are SO many potentially better ones. So book clubs are good 'cause they make choices for me! ;)

Excited to read and discuss with you all :)

message 24: by Aubrey (last edited Jan 08, 2015 06:54PM) (new)

Aubrey | 1 comments Hellooooo! (: My name's Aubrey, I'm 15 years old and a United States citizen (Rebeca, you're not the only young one!)

I love a range of genres, including fantasy, YA, historical fiction, and sci-fi (there's probably more but I can't remember them). Anything by Eva Ibbotson is amazing, but I also am obsessed with Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, the Ender's Game books (and Orson Scott Card in general to be perfectly honest), Anne of Green Gables (and all other L.M. Montgomery books), TFIOS, The Great Gatsby (SO GOOD! IT'S SO GOOD!), the Chronicles of Narnia, the Inheritance Cycle, all books by Tamora Pierce, Maximum Ride, the Abhorsen books (yay Garth Nix!), and one of my favorite series is the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane...As you can see I love a LOT of books.

Childhood favorites include: A Year with Frog and Toad (my first "real" book), the Ramona books, Little House on the Prairie, The Napping House, the City of Ember books

When I'm not reading I'm on the stage, on the softball field, in the robotics shop, writing, drawing, listening to film scores or on the internet. YouTube is my FRIEND - Some may know me as PhoenixEmber18 on Twitter...and then you know how much I love web series. I also role play on Hogwarts Online School.

message 25: by Cara (new)

Cara (btr2272) | 1 comments Hi everyone! I'm Cara. I'm 23 and have been living in LA for just over a year. I just finished watching Gilmore Girls and am excited and intimidated by taking on Rory's list!

I actually am an assistant video editor at Pemberley Digital, and despite getting to work on the last few months of Emma Approved, I have never read Emma. My Austen knowledge is limited to just P&P and S&S, so this should be a fun start for me!

Some of my favorite books of all time are: Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, Watership Down by Richard Adams, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, and then of course Harry Potter.

Mostly these days I read a lot of webcomics and graphic novels, and favorites of those include Dumbing of Age, Girls with Slingshots, Hark! A Vagrant, Johnny Wander, Relish, Lackadaisy, and Family Man.

I'm excited to meet and chat with all of you!

message 26: by Jane (new)

Jane (j10797) | 2 comments Hello! I'm Jane, which is a fabulous name to have as a lover of classic novels. I'm 17 years old from the US. Emma is possibly my favorite book of all time, so I was ecstatic to see that we were reading it first! (I'm refreshing my memory by listening to the audiobook in the car.)

Some of my favorite books (other than Austen) include the Little House books, Harry Potter, The Great Gatsby...

When I'm not reading, I enjoy tap dancing, cuddling with my cats, and drinking copious amounts of earl grey tea.

message 27: by Ariana (new)

Ariana (genre_shift) | 1 comments Hi new friends! I'm Ariana. I'm 23 and currently am living and working in Los Angeles with aspirations of moving to the bay area. (For some reason my hands almost typed 'aspirations of greatness'. I have those too.)

I grew up immersed in fantasy/sci-fi novels (shout out to Tamora Pierce, one of the defining influences in my life) but now I'm more into contemporary fiction. You'll learn quickly that I have a very bad memory, so this whole favorite books things is really stressful for me. But most recently, I've been enjoying George Saunders, Chris Bachelder, Kurt Vonnegut and *embarrassed cough* Foucault. Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams will be life long favorites.

Thanks to Netflix, I've recently re-watched all of Gilmore Girls, and could talk about the complexity of each character for days. My favorite character will always be Emily.

Like Robin, I'd like to read more Russian literature. I've loved what little Dostoyevsky and Nabokov I've read.

message 28: by Brianna (new)

Brianna (breedeevee) | 2 comments Hi guys! I'm Brianna. I'm 21 and living in Utah. I love a wide variety of books, but mostly ones aimed towards young adults. If I could be paid to read I'd be the happiest person ever haha. I love fantasy, sci-fi, dystopian, and lately I'm getting into classic novels. Jane Austen's books make me laugh because for some reason I find them hilarious. Emma especially.

It's so hard to choose favorites, but to name a few: Harry Potter (because Duh), The Way of Kings, The Book Thief, The Maze Runner, The Hunger Games, Unwind (by Neal Shusterman), Delirium, Fahrenheit 451, Pride & Prejudice, Anne of Green Gables, The Little Princess, Gone (by Michael Grant), The Inkheart Trilogy, The Looking Glass Wars, The City of Ember, Matched (Allie Condie), The Hourglass Door, The Books of Bayern (Shannon Hale), Anything by Gail Carson Levine, Narnia, nearly any and every fairytale retelling there is, etc etc etc. I could go on for days!

Obviously, I love to read. In a weird way, I use the characters and situations to relate to the rest of the world. Does that make sense? Someone could be discussing politics...and suddenly I'm reminded of an eerily similar thing in a book and that's how I understand things....or someone could be talking about their love life...etc you get the picture...I think. Anyway, books are fun and wonderful...but I also love to write. I've mostly done short stories and really crappy attempts at poetry, but I have a lot of story ideas I'm working on write now (get it? haha yay for cheesy puns).

When I'm not writing or reading...I sometimes draw, but lately I don't know what to draw. I also love listening to audiobooks while I'm cleaning. I also love puzzles and the outdoors.

I also love volleyball. I'm not very athletic but I've been making myself go once a week and I've been getting better! It's so much fun, but It's kind of hard to play and sing along with the disney music they play in the background at the same time haha. Did I mention I really really love Disney?

I work at a family search library center place type thing...sort've as a volunteer. I've got my fingers crossed that I can find a paying job soon. I need a paycheck to support my used bookstore addiction!

I love all forms of storytelling from books, to movies, to webseries...everything. Even the clothes people wear tell a story. If I were any good at acting, I would also love that, but I'm not. I'd laugh too much.

I'm so excited for this group! My goal for this year is to read a minimum of 52 books. in '13 I read 115...but I had more time and no social life back then. As much as I love books, I love people more and I need to find a balance.
Nice to meet you all! This is going to be so brilliant and fun!

I work as a math teacher. I read a variety of book types from classics, scifi, mysteries, comics, contemporary or what ever else sounds good at the time. I look forward to getting to know you more and discussing great books!

I love books, movies, TV shows, web series, and spending a lot of time online talking about all of the above. But we are here for the books! I love all different genres of books, basically I will read anything that sounds interesting to me.

My favorite books include the Harry Potter series, The Hunger Games series, the Lorien Legacies series (Pittacus Lore), Pride and Prejudice, Fight Club (Chuck Palahnuik), The Alchemist (Paulo Coelho), The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Douglas Adams), and Jurassic Park (Michael Crichton). There are so many more, but these are the ones that come to mind.

Hawaiicanuck (julirose) | 1 comments My name is Juli and I manage a book store in Central Florida, so I guess reading is pretty much second nature to me. I'll read about anything I can get my hands on. My favourites that I go back to often are anything by Jane Austen, the Harry Potter series, the Chronicles of Narnia, Anne of Green Gables, the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. When I'm not running, I spend way to much time at the various theme parks or I'm out running (usually listening to an audiobook).

Working in a book store sounds like so much fun! I work in retail so I know I'm romanticising it a lot, but I imagine it to be like Kathleen Kelly's The Shop Around the Corner in You've Got Mail.

Mariana | 1 comments Hello!
My name is Mariana, I'm 23, and I'm a doctor from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil!
I've always loved to read, and do it as often as I possibly can (and time allows)
My favorite authors are Jane Austen, Jorge Amado and Erico Verissimo (they are splendid Brazilian writers! If you are not familiar, I suggest you give them a go sometime..). I also love Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings series, as well as Anne of Green Gables.

Nice to meet you all. :)

Bookworm Jen Hi everyone! I’m Jen and I’m an elementary school librarian in southeastern Massachusetts.

Obviously I love to read, and it’s always very hard to pick favorite books or even genres because I enjoy such a range. I will say that two of my favorite series of all time are Harry Potter and Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, both of which I also love on audio. (I have the Jim Dale versions of HP, but I want to get Stephen Fry as well, because I’ve heard they’re great. Davina Porter, who does Outlander, is my absolute favorite audiobook narrator; I adore listening to her do the different accents in the books.) I tend to gravitate towards romance, mystery, fantasy, and historical fiction, and in the last few years, the majority of what I’ve read has been YA, but I really will try just about anything!

When I’m not reading, I watch a lot of tv and I’ve recently gotten hooked on several web series, but I do still have many to catch up on. I like going to movies, and I absolutely love musicals – I splurge on a Performing Arts Center season subscription each year, which has been a great way to see shows that I might not have gone to otherwise. I also enjoy doing counted cross-stitch, and I’ve just started learning to knit…I can’t wait to actually make something I can wear!

I’m looking forward to reading and talking about books with all of you, but I have to admit I have a bad habit of becoming a lurker online. I get caught up in reading posts and wind up either forgetting or running out of time to reply. (Case in point: it has taken me two weeks to finally post here for the first time!) But, I’m trying to be better about it, and one of my New Year’s Resolutions is to be more active/engaged online, so I hope participating in this book club will help me work on that. :-)

Irina (ireallylikereading) | 1 comments Hey everyone! :) my name is Irina, I'm a high school senior from Spain and this is my first book club! I'm so excited!!
I usually read classics, contemporary YA and historical fiction, but I really want to explore new genres this year. I LOVE reading, I always have, since I was very very little. Some of my favorite authors are Jane Austen, Rainbow Rowell, George Orwell, Matthew Quick, Patrick Ness... These are just a few. My favorite books are Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Jane Eyre, Fangirl, Sota Like A Rock Star, Animal Farm, Peter Pan, Inkheart, The Book Thief, The Help... I have a very long list!
I also really enjoy crafts and music, I play ukukele, guitar, a bit of piano and (try to) sing. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is my big obsession since I discovered it right when it was finishing (that was kind of a bummer) and I'm still just as obsessed. It also got me into webseries adaptations of classics! I love Emma Approved and The New Adventures of Peter Pan and Wendy. I have to admit I have kind of a problem with fanfiction. Oops.
So excited for this to be my first bookclub!!!

Chayil (cbranda) | 2 comments Why hello! My name is Chayil, like whale, but w a c. :) while I've noticed lots of Californians here, I'm from the other sunny state, Florida.

Reading is second only to breathing for me. I can't ever remember not having a book with me. My kindergarten teacher told my mom I had to leave the my books at home. Apparently, I wasn't pleased with her collection.

Now, I'm a copywriter, editor, and content director in the Tampa area. My dream, however, is to open a second-hand book store because I believe that every book deserves a second chance to change someone else's life the way it probably changed mine.

In addition to reading, usually at the beach, you will find me crocheting with my grandma via Skype, pretending to be a runner, living life with my amazing husband, working at my church, or working on an art project.

Couldn't choose a favorite book if I tried, and I've tried. But I love talking about the journeys books bring you through. Good ones and bad ones. I'm so excited to be a part of the group!

Devra (devrajasmine) | 1 comments Hello, everyone! My name is Devra. And I've been a bookworm ever since I learned how to read.

I love reading the classics, historical fiction, history, and biographies. Some of my favorite authors include C.S. Lewis, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, and Mark Twain.

When I'm not reading, I practice piano, listen to audiobooks/podcasts, knit, watch classic films, and keep up with my favorite literary webseries.

(BTW, I'm a big fan of Emma Approved -- and Dayeanne's performance in it).

Look forward to reading books with you all!

Suzanne Hi! I'm Suzanne and live in Cincinnati. I have always loved books since I first learned to read them.

As a child I loved the Nancy Drew series, Babysitters Club and Shel Silverstein. And I of course loved Harry Potter.

I have always loved Jane Austen book especially P&P and persuasion. Other favorites include Jane Eyre, the Hunger Games series, Chronicles of Narnia, Book Thief, Redeeming Love.

I read mostly YA and historical fiction especially based around WWII and the Tudor time of England.

I'm excited about this book club and to read some books that I might not have otherwise picked up.

Claire Burns Hi, everyone! My name is Claire (despite what my account says), and I am a fourteen-year-old from the USA. Some of my favorite books include The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater, The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, and Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. My favorite AUTHORS (which happen to be of the YA variety) are Maggie Stiefvater and John Green. When I'm not reading, I love to play music and talk about fictional characters.

Hope | 1 comments Hello all! My name is Hope and I am a 17 year old senior in high school. I'm hoping to study English and Communications in collee, so much of my current free time is spent filling out college applications. When I'm not freaking out over higher education or reading, i enjoy writing and playing music (mostly guitar or ukulele but can play a decent tune on the piano on a good day). Some of my favorite books include Harry Potter, Pride and Prejudice, Matilda, the Leviathan trilogy, and pretty much everything by H.G. Wells. I am very excited to be in this group and read some amazing books!

message 43: by Esther (new)

Esther (estherjoybelle) | 5 comments Hi everyone! I'm Esther (EstherJoybelle elsewhere on the internet). I'm 28 and I live in Melbourne, Australia. I'm a social worker and children's counsellor, and outside work I'm usually found cooking, spending too much time on Twitter, or, you know, reading. Sometimes. Not often enough :)

This is my first book club, and I fear my tastes are not very refined! There are so many classics I didn't read as a child and still haven't read now. Rory Gilmore puts me to shame. Alice Rackham too, actually.

When I was a kid, I read a lot of Baby Sitter's Little Sister, then the Baby Sitter's Club books, followed by a variety of YA fiction, especially books by Australian YA author John Marsden (Tomorrow When the War Began series, Winter, Checkers). Until my One True Love came along - Harry Potter. I refused to read it at first, but after I saw the first movie I read the first four books and was hooked. My final year of high school, 2004, found me spending countless hours on MuggleNet, reading theories, writing editorials, and devouring fanfiction. My obsession tapered off after Half-Blood Prince until I achieved canonical closure with Deathly Hallows. But true closure only came when I saw the Deathly Hallows Part 2 movie, and bawled my eyes out forever. My passion for screen adaptations of favourite books is fierce.

In high school I also loved Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, Sophie's World and The Solitaire Mystery (Jostein Gaarder), Girl With a Pearl Earring (Tracy Chevalier), Brave New World (Aldous Huxley), and The Godfather (Mario Puzo).

At university I went through a stage where Harry Potter was pretty much the only fiction I would read, and I immersed myself in Christian non-fiction, especially books by John Eldredge.

As an adult, I have loved discovering Jane Eyre (now my favourite book of all time!), Anne of Green Gables etc, the Narnia Chronicles, and the rest of Jane Austen's novels. Still on my list of classics to read: Little Women, North and South, Wuthering Heights, Walden, The Great Gatsby, and Anna Karenina.

And I always have room for some light contemporary fiction - I've particularly enjoyed Australian authors Melanie La'Brooy, Maggie Groff and Don Tillman.

I'm looking forward to being a part of the book club, and I hope I'll be able to keep up!

Also - no Gilmore Girls spoilers please! I've still only made it to the end of season 3 ...

Meghan Navarro | 1 comments Hello, all! I’m a little late to this party but really excited to be here. My name is Meghan, I’m a 29-year-old San Francisco native now living in Washington, DC. My full-time job is in prospect research, analysis and analytics in a University fundraising office, but I also do contract and scholarship research for the Smithsonian and a Florida-based history/archaeology project. I think of myself as in between degrees – I have Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Cultural Anthropology, and hope to return in pursuit of my PhD in Fall 2016. I love to read and am very excited for an online book group that brings together literature lovers of all ages and backgrounds from around the world!

The first book I read on my own was Paddle to the Sea, by Holling Clancy Holling. I read it out loud to my mom at age 3 at a pace of about one page per night, and it is still an all-time favorite. Other children’s books on my all-time favorite list are all the Winnie the Pooh books and The Wind in the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame. I adore the Harry Potter series, Lord of the Rings, all of Jane Austen’s novels, The Curve of Time by Muriel Wylie Blanchett and Demian by Hermann Hess. Favorites on my anthropology shelf include Do Glaciers Listen? by Julie Cruikshank, Wisdom Sits in Places by Keith Basso, and anything by Hugh Brody or Clifford Geertz. I also have a soft spot for mystery novels by authors including Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Diane Matt Davidson, and Lilian Jackson Braun. I also find Oscar Wilde hilarious and Dylan Thomas beguiling.

When I’m not reading, working, or researching, I enjoy hanging out with my awesome husband and our beloved cat, bird watching, cooking, hiking, kayaking, and camping, and I’m mildly obsessed with European travel, Barclays Premier League soccer, and curling (the sport). I’m looking forward to this new reading adventure!
