What matters in Jane Austen by John Mullan. I read it last summer and it's really good and entertaining! The writer challenges you to think about the details of the text, but not in an annoying lecturing way, but like a fellow Austenite. He asks questions and then gives you the answers. For example, how many wives in Austen call their hudband by first name? How does the weather affect the stories, characters and does Austen use weather in the same way as her contemporary writers.
Only bad thing was that the book was way too short..
If you get the the chance to read it or attend Mullan's lectures, take it! That is...if you passionately love Jane Austen, like I do.
