LizH (liz_h) | 955 comments Just started Revival. A lot of you all read it as a group read, I am just a little late to the party!

message 3: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 17080 comments Glad to see we have a new thread for the new year! Thanks, Carol!
NR I started Station Eleven as my first audio of the new year. I had hoped to get the audio of Ordinary Grace to start it, but should get it Saturday.
JF my last book of 2014 was Annihilation, a bit strange, but pretty good. I couldn't stop listening last night.

message 4: by Wiley (new)

Wiley | 95 comments Happy New Year to all! My recreational read is still SHADOW OF NIGHT so it will be my first book of 2015 instead of my last book of 2014. Love it. I will move on to a few other books before I read #3 but look forward to seeing how everything comes together.

I like Baldacci and have The Escape on my list to read. Have several M/T books waiting for my attention, but got myself involved with an H/F book (I Am The Chosen King by Helen Hollick) with 577 pages; I'm currently at page 91. Hopefully I can get back to M/T soon, but always like a change once in awhile. So far it's been an interesting read.

Amy | 1346 comments JF We were liars. Loved the book.

message 10: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 17080 comments We Were LiarsIt was really good, wasn't it, Amy! I have another book by E Lockhart The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks on hold at the library.
NR I am trying to read a large print copy of Ordinary Grace. I probably need the large print (!) but it is just large enough to be distracting. I guess I need a medium large print font.
Still waiting on the audio, and I hope to get it soon so I can finish the book that way, I am up to chapter 9 so almost ready to post on the first thread of chapters 1-10.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17080 comments Frances: I Am the Chosen King looks like an interesting book, should one read The Forever Queen first since it is the first in the series? I can get both with my Kindle Unlimited access.

Ann, I was actually going to read 'The Forever Queen' first as it had been recommended by Goodreads. However, I checked the reviews on Amazon and noticed that 'I Am the Chosen King' was one of her first books, so thought I would start with that one - have every intention of reading "The Forever Queen" as well (later). Both books received excellent reviews so was quite excited about discovering a new author. She seems to be quite similar to Sharon Kay Penman's style of writing - really enjoyed Penman's "Here Be Dragons".

Shomeret | 1504 comments NR: The Iris Fan: A Novel of Feudal Japan(Japanese historical fiction) by Laura Joh Rowland

Laura Joh Rowland is my most read mystery author, but this is the last book in her Sano series. So other authors may leapfrog over her if she goes in a new direction that doesn't interest me. I'm hoping that she ends this series well.

Michael (fisher_of_men) | 7 comments Just finished The Accident by Linwood Barclay. This was a 4-star page turner. A true thriller in every sense of the word with a great plot twist at the end. My New Years resolution is to READ MORE LINWOOD BARCLAY.

i liked The Accident by barclay when i read it last year. i've also read
Fear the Worst which was also very good.

message 23: by Michael (new)

Michael (fisher_of_men) | 7 comments I just finished I Stooged to Conquer: The Autobiography of the Leader of the Three Stooges by Moe Howard. (Yes, THAT Moe!) It's a 3-star firsthand account of the act throughout the 20th century. It's not a work of literature, but of interest to anyone (like myself) is a fan of the trio and wants to know a little of what went on behind-the-scenes of their wild and wacky short films.

message 24: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4379 comments I have to figure out what I'm reading. or where I am in each book. I did finish one book this year so far.
I also starting reserving books on the library website which is a bad idea it's too easy. I did cancel one so far but have 3 books in route. so will probably get them all the same day plus already have one out. ugh. so much for catching up on the currently started books.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17080 comments Good to know, Mike. Thanks for the recommendation. I have a couple of biography / memoir type books already lined up but may try the Stooges book soon.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17080 comments JF The Anatomy of Deception audio. This was a very enjoyable book! I am looking forward to the buddy read discussion.
JF Ordinary Grace print. Also very enjoyable!
NR not sure on my next audio. I am having trouble settling on my current print book too.
Winter isn't my favorite season either, DonnaJo.
I can handle it in small doses, but it usually isn't content to occur in small doses. ;)

message 35: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4379 comments I was asked if I wanted go to my niece's to have pot roast one of my favorites today but I turned it down. ugh. one I'm just not in the mood to go out when it's still alittle icy around and two tomorrow is weigh in and I feel this is a good week don't want to wreck it tonight. I already threw salt near the stoop but see it looks icy in different areas yet so hoping off then might "drive" over to the mailbox/garbage garage to get rid of garbage and get saturday and yesterday's mail. I'm dreading it over there. I'm hoping it's not icy. I'll just take my time and hope I can get a close parking spot.

Today I'm concentrating on reading an arc that has to be reviewed and letting ann go by anonymous (anyone remember go ask alice same author I always used to love that book one of these days I want to read it again to see if I feel the same) this one seems good so far it's done in journal style.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17080 comments JF Serial: Season One the PBS podcast recommended by Carol. I was quite impressed!

message 42: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4379 comments I ended up giving in yesterday and called the hug light website and ordered they have a promo which they can't even sell just one. which I found strange. they do buy one and get one free. but the thing is the second one you still have to pay the shipping and handling. so it's $10 and $6.00 something for the first one then just the $6.00 something for the second. why don't they just say the second is so much off because it's not really free if you are still payng something for it. I knew I would probably end up with 2 most likely anyway since that what how it came with my sister's. she has one at home and one at the shore. I'll probably do the same thing. Since my bedside light down the shore it's the best for reading print books. I've used my sister's in the past and I like it so I'm hoping it's the same thing with this one.

message 43: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4379 comments oh almost forgot finished 2 books last night.
fallen to far by abbi glines (and good thing the library called last night the 2nd in the series came in so will be stopping by there this when I go out later)
and the second book is one I read to review later in the month by katherine garbera.

I'm still reading letting ana go by anonymous
trying to decide if I want to take back the demon kind by cinda williams chima which I was going to read as a grp read for my one board. since I have it until the beginning of next month I might hold it for another week.
Tomorrow is tori's second birthday so we are having just a small family party around lunch time because I think robbie has a hockey game in the morning and there might be one later in the afternoon if not a hockey game there was some reason we are doing it around lunch time. can't believe she's 2 years old.

NR: Death Without Company Again, filling in missing pieces in the series

message 46: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 17080 comments I started three audiobooks yesterday, one I will listen to later upon reflection when I am in the mood, one I will save for some space between watching it on film (Olive Kitteridge) and one I wanted to get to for a while but wanted to time it right because it's length (21 hours) will consume me for a while.so after fifteen minutes of Olive, and another twenty minutes of Lena Dunham's Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's "Learned", I picked up and settled in with
NR The Paying Guests
JF Serial: Season One has left my head too full of true crime details to even think about a book in that vein right now.

It is of interest to me on many levels. The narration is wonderful, the details of the London setting in 1922 fascinating and the mc's perspective on that post war time is of great interest.
