Recently purchased The Life of the Mind : The Groundbreaking Investigation on How We Think. Will be reading that one this year hopefully.
I'm about to start reading The Human Condition, after just finishing a biography about Hannah Arendt. And I plan to read through her work from there.
Oh gosh, I was about to start a thread for H.A. thinking: " How could we have forgotten Arendt?" and here she already is... :PHmm, I'd be interested in The Human Condition and The Life of the Mind, also in The Origins of Totalitarianism and possibly On Violence .
I was thinking of reading the Eichmann, but since HA is so new to me I would be open to hearing about any of your thoughts and reactions to any of her books. They all sound so great. I have no plans to read her immediately, but hopefully sometime later in 2015.
Kris, Daniel, I'm very interested to hear/read what you think about Eichmann in Jerusalem. For the historical facts I can recommend Hitler's Bureaucrats: The Nazi Security Police and the Banality of Evil as additional read.I'm planning to read Rahel Varnhagen: The Life of a Jewess this year.
James, I wonder if you would be interested in reading Into That Darkness: An Examination of Conscience by Gitta Sereny with Kris and myself? It deals with - well, here are some blurb descriptions:
The scene is Treblinka; the character is Franz Stangl. The theme is the mass extermination of men, women and children. As Commandant of Treblinka, Stangl was imprisoned for life. Gitta Sereny covered the trial on behalf of a London newspaper. Fascinated by the prisoner, she decided to make an effort to get to know him better, to delineate him more deeply.
and: Based on 70 hours of interviews with Franz Stangl, commandant of Treblinka (the largest of the extermination camps), this book bares the soul of a man who continually found ways to rationalize his role in Hitler's final solution.
Discussion thread for that is here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
