Mortimer Alba-Curie | 2 comments This is Mohammed writing this, ignore the other name. The story I chose was Divergent. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read, it’s full of action, has a really cool character that was kind of my inspiration for Anna, (she was a cumulation of a lot of things I think, I don’t remember when I thought her up) and has a very engaging storyline. I read divergent looking more on how she introduces her world, how she explains what parts of it when and how she does it without overwhelming her readers or leaving them clueless then springing a part or bit of crucial information on them.
She is also very efficient with her fight scenes. She also sets the scene at the beginning, uses vague details to allow the readers to imagine everything themselves, making the writing seem even more real than it really is. I didn’t realize this at first, and it totally changed all future fight scenes I will ever write. I also loved how she did the different cultures of the factions. I think culture is something that is so important and something that is often overlooked horribly. (Even J. K. Rowling messed this up slightly!) Finally, I tried to really pay attention to how she built her characters, how she introduced her characters without overwhelming them. Apparently, I gave most of the too little ‘screen time.’ I introduced them the way J. R. R. Tolkien did in the hobbit when all of the dwarfs met Bilbo Baggins, but instead of growing their stories as the book went on, I killed almost all of them in the first chapter.
