Once upon a time, the United States was one of the strongest countries in the world. But everything changed when the Chinese army attacked. Due to grudges, and rising tensions between the two countries due to the now bankrupt United States's rising debts, the Chinese fought a long war with the States, which they won. And so the American State of China was born.

But the American citizens were not happy whatsoever with the new arrangement. They rebelled against the Chinese, and won. But the two wars left America in a terrible state, and somebody was needed to rebuild it.

That person was Gregory Illéa. He remade the country, and put in place a series of laws and systems. The caste system. The Selection. Illéa was crowned king, and he put in place an event called the Selection, in which thirty-five girls would be chosen at random to compete for the hand in marriage of the prince. He also put in place the caste system, and made the country grow some more.

But not everyone was happy, and two rebel groups grew. The Northerns and the Southerns. The Northerns attacked more frequently, but they rarely killed. But when the Southerns attacked, people died. Always.

This year the prince comes of age, and so it is time for the Selection. The girls have been chosen, and announced on live television.

But there's a change this year. Because there isn't a king or queen. Instead, shuffling around the palace is the Regent, an official who runs the country while the prince is still not of age.

Nobody knows, however, that the Regent is not what he seems. While he is an official and advisor in the Illéan government, he is also a very high-up leader of the Southern rebels. And they're planning a massive attack. Already, there are many rebels in the castle - both Southerns trying to help and Northerns trying to stop them. And then there's the ones caught in the crossfire.
