Both levels

Level One:
Read 3 books that take place in your home nation. If you live in the US you can choose to use your state instead.

California

1. Crushed Velvet (A Material Witness Mystery, #2) by Diane Vallere Crushed Velvet 06/19
The action takes place in a cozy fictional town near Los Angeles.

2. Death of a Sales Rep (Gotcha Detective Agency Mystery #3) by Jamie Lee Scott Death of a Sales Rep 07/04
This series revolves around a private detective agency set in Salinas, near beautiful Monterey, though in this installment the group drives to a sales convention in awesome San Francisco.

3. The Decorator Who Knew Too Much (A Madison Night Mystery Book 4) by Diane Vallere The Decorator Who Knew Too Much 07/09
Series normally takes place in Texas, but in this particular book the mc and her s.o. take a working trip to Palm Springs, renown for midcentury architecture.

Read 1 book that is set in your state's capital city Sacramento:

1. Living the Vida Lola (A Lola Cruz Mystery #1) by Melissa Bourbon Living the Vida Lola 08/11

Level Two
List 4 things or places you love about your state then read a book that somehow reflects that attribute or place, telling us how. You can be as creative as you like.

[note: I ended up doing 6 as it was hard to choose what to include]

1. Beaches - Sour Grapes (A Savannah Reid Mystery) by G.A. McKevett Sour Grapes
We are known for awesome beaches and boardwalks. This book is set in a fictional beach town in Southern California.

2. Lakes - Matrimony Meltdown (Zoe Donovan Mystery #13) by Kathi Daley Matrimony Meltdown 07/03
Our state has many breathtaking mountain lakes. This particular series' location is based on author's hometown of beautiful Lake Tahoe.

3. Wineries/vineyards - Hair of the Dog (Cypress Cove #3) by Carlene O'Neil Hair of the Dog 07/10
We are also known worldwide for our wines, and there are several wine regions. This particular story is set in a wine region in Central California.

4. Golden Gate Bridge - Shooting Gallery (An Art Lover's Mystery, #2) by Hailey Lind Shooting Gallery 08/05
There is just something so welcoming about the sight of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, set in the San Francisco Bay. This story is set in the San Francisco Bay Area, and at one point the mc stays at the glam Fairmont Hotel, in a room with a view of Golden Gate.

5. Gold Country - Dying for a Double (Laurel McKay Mysteries Book 8) by Cindy Sample Dying for a Double 09/08
The famous California Gold Rush occured in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The first discovery of gold was at Sutter's Mill in Coloma in 1848. That town is the setting of this cozy mystery. The MC lives nearby in Placerville, which was also part of the Gold Rush, and takes care of business in Georgetown, which is yet another gold mining town.

6. Hollywood/theme parks/Universal Studios - Vampires of Hollywood by Adrienne Barbeau Vampyres of Hollywood 11/19
One can't finish off a California snapshot without mentioning Hollywood, with a nod to all the fun stuff like Universal Studios and theme parks (Disneyland anyone?). This particular book is a vampire story and could be a metaphor for the "real" Hollywood.

-------------------------oooooo--------------------
I hope you enjoyed this abbreviated visit to some of California's high points. These days we need all the positive armchair/computer travelling we can get!

Allison | 1004 comments Normally, I’m not all that interested in books set in the States but I think Level two could be quite fun!

Level 1:

Three books set in the States (or Michigan):

1.) The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon (New York, USA) 8/6/20
2.) The Fallen (Amos Decker, #4) by David Baldacci (Pennsylvania, USA) 8/20/20
3.)

A book set in your capital city:

1.) Detroit An American Autopsy by Charlie LeDuff (Can not find anything I’d read featuring the location of my State Capital - Everyone thinks the capital is Detroit anyway.) 5/3/21?

Four books representing what I love about the States:

1.)
2.)
3.)
4.)

Thank you! The issue's not that much about finding a book in General but one I can get my hands on and if I can I'd rather read something I have already at home - some of them wait already years for me to read them :-)

June 01, 2020 to May 31, 2021
Both levels
