the beginning itself describes the title
i.e.
What exactly is casual vacancy,
and gives us a hint of events to come.
And the small prologue is the Key Point of the incidents occuring later on,
Chapter 1 starts with Barry Fairbrother's death...

I've read the book recently in February, so I won't be re-reading it so soon, but it's quite fresh in my mind so I would love to join the discussion. :)

the first chapter shows how the handful of people in Pagford are affected by Barry's death ... and it also goes on to show the basic characteristic and living conditions of all those that are introduced .

For first time readers , by now tone of the book is set . We come to know they the backward slum-like Fields is the point of dispute among liberal minded and regressive patrician like facts . Barry Fairbrother is a product of the Fields , perhaps the only one who managed to escape a deprived childhood . Whereas the huge portly Molinson is of the opinion that the fields should be disowned by Pagford community .
And now that Barry's death has led to a Casual vacancy , the decision about the Fields is slightly favouring the Molinson faction .. unless the opposite party gets someone as charismatic as Barry to lead them.
In this book, there is no minor character. Each and every character is given almost the same importance , and that is what I love about this .

At page 230, enjoying it as much as I did the first time .
the most wonderful aspect of the book is character building , and I am enjoying the friction and frisson between the various characters .
( since I feel noone else is reading or interested , I may come back here only if others join in... otherwise it feels weird to keep on a monologue :). )

This would be my re read. I first listened to the audio of this book 3 years ago and was flabbergasted. And after a couple of months when I saw a much discounted new hardcopy on sale in Amazon, I just grabbed the chance.
I fell in love with Rowling's prowess for the written word.
I so wish she writes another book like this.
BLURB:
A BIG NOVEL ABOUT A SMALL TOWN ...
When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.
Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.
Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils ... Pagford is not what it first seems.
And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?
