More details: Boy repeatedly explains that they are in South Bend Indiana. Boy may go to the past at some point- I remember him craving a fully loaded cheeseburger, fries, and a chocolate shake. Boy's name might be Howard. Sorry it's so vague!

What is the man's occupation (e.g., architect, clergy)? How did the man travel into the future and what problem was he trying to solve? What time period is he from?

I think it is "Where the Towers Pierce the Sky", although I remembered the protagonist incorrectly. As soon as I saw the cover I recognized it. Thank you so much!
