Kate S | 6459 comments Among all the challenges of the lockdown this spring, some of my happiest moments have been reading Beatrix Potter’s tales with my family.

Inspired by The Tales of Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddle-Duck and more, read a novel which has a main character’s name or nickname in the title. First, last or full name are okay, and the name may be the whole title or part of it. (examples: Olive Kitteridge, Jane Eyre, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and The Brothers Karamazov).

Please post any discussion about task 20.8 in this thread.

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments I take it from the inspiration for this task that the main character doesn't have to be human? Does Because of Winn-Dixie work? Winn-Dixie is a dog.

Yes, a main character works for this task.

Marie (mariealex) | 1117 comments Hello ! Would it work for a group of people ?
I'm thinking of The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat
(the 3 main characters' nickname as a group is The Supremes)

It's a bit of a stretch, but we'll allow it.

Mary | 1425 comments The task says the book must be a “novel” to quality for this task.

Will The Life of Alexander Smith, Captain of the Island of Pitcairn: One of the Mutineers on Board His Majesty's Ship, Bounty by Alexander Smith work?

The book reads like a memoir, but it appears to be fiction. See. https://catalog.loc.gov/vwebv/search?... under “description”

Unfortunately less than half of the book is set on Pitcairn but it is a good read. Smith has been shipwrecked/stranded on four different islands BEFORE he ends up on Pitcairn!

Date correction to 1816 requested in Librarian thread.

Elizabeth (Alaska) No, sorry, that won't work for this task.

It will work for 10.3 One at a time, though, as Smith is a single syllable.

Great idea! Thanks, there are some good oldies points!

Rebekah (bekalynn) Would The Family Fang work? I saw The Brothers Karamazov was listed as an example so the family would work?

Haha! Yes, as the family name is Fang, this works.

Bryony (bryony46) | 247 comments Trust me to have a question about this task!

I just finished reading The Count of Monte Cristo and was about to post it for this task, but I wanted to check it’s okay first.

Although it’s not his given name, for most of the book the main character is known by this name and other characters generally call him ‘Count’ or ‘Monte Cristo’ so is this okay?

Ha! This is *your* task! Yes, it looks as if it complies because you added nickname. Although this certainly isn't a nickname, it is the name by which he is known.

Bryony (bryony46) | 247 comments Thank you! I honestly debated about whether it should count (haha!) or not. Though I realised that I read Don Quixote for this task too, which is also not the character’s given name but is the name he’s known as throughout the book. Thanks again! :-)
