Several of us plan to start the first book in the series, the novella, in January. The rest of the books are to be determined.

Same here. I've put the first two audiobooks on hold at Overdrive.

Is the first novella in ? I originally tried reading but found I was lost because it felt like I missed an entire book on how Anna came to be where she was especially since it alluded to a lot of past issues. So I quit the book intending to go back and read it later but never did.

I think I read somewhere ... but don't remember and got confused.
Where does the Mercy Thompson series come in? For continuity do I need to read that series before this one?

It's a bit complicated because the stories in both series intercept at some point. I'd say read them in order of publication:

Yup, the prequel novella is a MUST read before reading book 1. That's when Charles & Anna meet.

The novella, Alpha & Omega, is found in the anthology, On the Prowl and as a separate book. It must be read before Cry Wolf.

Does everyone here know how to access a book's series list here on Goodreads? It is a lifesaver to avoid reading out of order. There's a Mercy Thompson World series list that reflects D.G.'s post. Here's the link which is on each book's page:
