Finished this in one sitting! It was fantastic. Tamora Pierce didn't let me down on what I expect from her books. Looking at it from the standpoint of "first book I've read in this world", it is easy to follow without reading the previous eight books (four following Alanna and four following Daine). Pierce makes it easy to follow and adds in little explanations so if you haven't read anything else, you won't be lost. Kel is just the kind of female lead I love in her writing. Strong and needs no help from others. Another great role model for young girls.
You do have to Zaz! And then every other book she has written in Tortall ;). I think this is the last series of her Tortall books I haven't read, until she comes out with new ones. She has another series/world called The Circle of Magic, but I haven't read them yet.I know what you mean about so many books so little time! I made the mistake of signing up for a free service that finds me book deals every day. That plus peoples recommendations here.... I think I'm good for the next few years!
Don't worry, if I like the 1st book, I'll read the series. I'm faithful to authors who write good stories, so if there's nothing really disappointing, I read all their work.
I thank some publishers who set really high prices to books, so I don't buy them immediately :p

This series takes place after the first two quartets and follows the first girl to try and become a knight as an actual girl (something that wasn't allowed until after the first quartet). Pierce is well known for writing some of the most amazingly strong female characters out there in fantasy.
I also know many people who read this one first and did not even realize there were other books before it, so don't hesitate go join me ;). Even if you don't, you really need to read these books :D
