Hi everyone. I'm pretty new to Goodreads and the paranormal genre and was looking for some 'must read' recommendations to get me stared. I used to read mostly fantasy and have suffered a five year break from reading. Hoping to end the drought with some awesome titles, new or old. Thanks heaps for any suggestions.

have u read Eragon? its a little too long but it's interesting and it's popular between the fantasy books.
Jade wrote: "Ya or adult?"I'd say adult. I tried a few young-adult, I think I've outgrown them. I prefer stories that have more depth and weight to them.
Jade wrote: "have u read Eragon? its a little too long but it's interesting and it's popular between the fantasy books."Haven't read Eragon; I only found it after the movie came out, and I tend to be put off books that get butchered in film (I think it's a poor way to meet a great story). Is it worth checking out anyway?
Kelleigh wrote: "Must read is the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning!"Head lots about that one, just waiting for it to be delivered ;) Thanks.
I love these series, I'm not sure if your into PNR tho.
Urban Fantasy:
I have more suggestions, but figured you could see if these pique your interest.

I don't usually read romance, but it was a random PNR that introduced me to paranormal/UF, so I don't knock anything anymore. Thanks Lanie, some nice sounding recommendations.
I'm happy to help! If you want more UF or different ones just holler! Also, if you get to read them you must let me know what ya think. Good or bad:D

The Dragon Kin series is so funny, often in a warped way, but funny. Her Pride series (written as Laurenston) is very funny too, but set in modern times & with shifters instead of dragons.
I highly recommend the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series - though billed as YA, it's mature and adult worthy. The vibrant and violent world of chimera and angels will pull you in. Daughter of Smoke & Bone
it's sci-fi
gritty
characters overlap & one series leads into the next one.
lighter then the other series, funny.
Lol, I went back and read the blurb for Dragon Actually, it does sound funny -plus Lanie's review sold it pretty well. Maybe I will give PNR a bit more of a try.

I always hesitate to give recommendations but I thoroughly enjoyed the Dragon Hunters series by Drako. I read them through R2R on here. You could see if they're still available. I don't think anybody signed up for them when I did so maybe they didn't seem appealing to anybody else.

Eragon (the book) was fantastic as was the entire series. The movie butchered it horribly and probably put off many potential readers. They are lengthy, but well worth the time.
If you like the more realistic fantasy (medieval setting, but fantasy psychic powers), I would recommend Kathryn Kurtz Deryni Series. Her latest one in the Childe Morgan series just came out.

It's a sad truth how books get rushed onto the screen to their detriment -usually for a money grab. Obviously there has to be some loss/change in the translation, but I think a lot of potential is wasted for wont of a little love and cleverness in adapting books to screenplays. That and lazy directing. And sometimes some really bad acting...
I'll check them out though -my sister loves them too.

Deep In Your Veins series by Suzanne Wright. First book in the series is called "Here Be Sexist Vampires" :)
Here be sexist vampires was really good!the Blood of Eden is a good trilogy. It's a paranormal dystopian. It's YA though, but still really good.
Anything in the Jim Butcher Harry Dresden series.
Also ... one of our group reads is a nice Zombie action series. It's series pick so we'll be reading it for a while.

I keep hearing about this one, I reckon I'll have to give it a go now. Thanks.

[bo..."Wow! Soooo many books right there. Thanks Anna, I'll check out the Dresden series.
Jenn wrote: "Do you like comedy or serious?"Hi Jenn. I like a bit of everything, but I reckon the best serious books are also the funniest, and the funniest some of the darkest. It's the contrast between the two extremes that IMHO really makes them work their best. Know any like that?
How do you feel about paranormals with romantic elements? If you're good with that, I'd read: Ilona Andrews, Jeanine Frost, Isabel Jordan, Molly Harper, Darynda Jones

Thanks Jennifer, found a few gems to add to the W2R pile -it's getting so big now!

Oh, good! I'm glad you found a few you liked the look of. Can't wait to talk to you about them!
Lots of good recommendations here! I'd thought of the Dresden Files. If you want something lighter, try Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. It's satire and lighter, so maybe fits your dark and serious and funny criteria? I'd start with Mort
- Death's apprentice or Night Watch.
. Best wishes on diving back into reading!
