Beautiful, poignant, heart wrenching and intense. I love this book. Zakhor, Al Tichkah. Never Forget. Not just the truth of the holocaust, not just the awful truth of the French action in the Vel' d'Hiv'. Never forget the personal stories of each life. The lives of every Jewish child, every Jewish person, and the lives of every French person in 1942-44. The ones who turned their heads and pretended all was well, the ones who helped secretly and still felt shame. Woven into their stories was the modern day personal story of the American born French journalist discovering the seldom told story of the terrible days of the Vel' d'Hiv'. From the ashes some beauty and restoration did arise. And from the death lives moved on.
