He could have done it. At any moment He could have called down twelve legions of angels to blast them all off the face of the earth. He could have stepped down from the cross and stood towering above the crowd, fearsome and splendid in the fullness of His glory, His eyes like flames, a crown of stars replacing the thorns upon His head, a bright two-edged sword proceeding out of His mouth. The knife lay at his fingertips, but he did not consider it “a thing to be grasped.” Instead, he flung it far away and spilled the cup of His life blood over the ground in an act of complete and utterly self-abnegating love.
