Jane strode out of her house with a happy sigh. A stomach bug had kept her inside for the past few days and now even a trip to the grocery store across the street felt like a treat. Footsteps sounded nearby and she glanced around to see who it was. She smiled. David, her neighbour, walked a few paces behind her, his head bent over his phone. She should greet him. She opened her mouth then snapped it shut. Her brow furrowed. It was a warm, sunny morning, so why was David wearing gloves?
A second glance revealed that David was carrying a skateboard in one hand. Oh, of course! Skateboarding gloves. The revelation sent a bolt of lightning through Jane's heart. The feeling was a mix of shock, excitement, and residual fear. Jane loved skateboarding, but she'd given it up five years earlier, the day she'd found a dead body near her skate park. She'd been 22 at the time and in her final semester of college, and the rest of that semester had been a nightmare. She'd recounted the story over and over to the police, insisting that she didn't know anything. As soon as she'd graduated, she'd moved across the country and never looked back."Can I help you?" David said sarcastically, and Jane realized she was staring at him.
She swallowed hard.
