Hi Bookadillos!

Hope everyone's doing ok and keeping safe these days.
In light of the Black Lives Matter revolution that's currently going on and our committment to creating a safe, supportive and equal space for our readers (and everyone else!!), we are so thrilled to be reading I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou for our June pick!
Literature is a powerful tool in making people's voices and experiences heard, so we want to encourage book club members to comment on our other discussion thread with some of the books by Black authors that have impacted you. Let's create a collective list of resources and encourage more Black voices into our reading list, monthly nominations and into our lives.

So to get us started this month, what are some of your first impressions on our theme and book of the month? Have you read this book before? Are you reading it again? This is obviously a very acclaimed work that I have had on my reading list for years but haven't gotten my hands on yet, so I'm excited to have the kick in the butt I needed to get a copy and get into it! If you haven't read it yet, what do you think of the title? What could it mean? Do you have any idea what it's about or what to expect? If you have read it, what advice do you have for new readers? Where should we put our focus and intentions?

Looking forward to hearing from everyone,
The Manic Bookadillos

Melissa Plante | 4 comments Hi everyone! Trying to catch up today. I haven't read this book before or anything by Maya Angelou so I'm excited to dive in. I don't know what to expect and am looking forward to reading more. Only a few pages in and am already hooked.

I had always heard of this book, and had a copy on my shelf. I’m so glad the club chose it so I could break it out. I knew something to be profound, because that title spoke volumes. Although outside of the title, I knew nothing about the book.

Sometimes it’s worth digging up the classics, and I think this one was well worth it. So far, I can’t stop reading tonight.
