Anita (anitafajitapitareada) | 1550 comments Nominations are now open for our August 'Read Around the World' book.

To make sure we don't get stuck just exploring one or two continents, we won't accept nominations set on either of the last two continents we visited. So for this month that means neither Africa nor Europe, Please see rules below for nomination guidelines

Once the winner is selected by poll, we will strike that country off the list.

Nomination Criteria
1. Book must be written by a woman (transwomen and women writing under male pseudonyms are women)
2. Book must be set (or at least half-set) in a country that has not been 'visited' already (See below).
3. Book should not be set on either of the last two continents we visited (Africa and Europe)
4. No books that have already been group reads (see the big list of previous reads)
5. You cannot nominate your own book.

Nomination Rules
1. Please identify the title, authors name, and the country your book is set in when nominating.
2. Please use the Goodreads 'add book/author' button when nominating, otherwise your nomination may be missed.
3. Please indicate whether you are willing to lead discussion on the book.
4. One nomination per person.

List of Non-Eligible Countries (view spoiler)

Nominations will close on 25 June

Nominations so far:
The Mountains Sing by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai - Vietnam (Asia)
Under the Silk Cotton Tree by Jean Buffong - Grenada (Americas)
The Woman from Tantoura by Radwa Ashour - Palestine (Asia)

Hannah | 1515 comments I would like to nominate The Mountains Sing by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai set in Việt Nam

I don't have much experience with group reads but I can have a go at leading if you want

Sorry Story, Europe and Africa are no-go continents this round (we're currently reading from Sweden and last RAtW we read from Zimbabwe). Please do come back with another nomination though.

I deleted my suggestion.

〰️Beth〰️ (x1f4a0bethx1f4a0) | 97 comments I will suggest Her Mother's Mother's Mother and Her Daughters by Maria José Silveira. Brazil I do not think it was on your long list.

message 9: by Michaela (new)

Michaela | 422 comments Brazil´s on the list, sadly. Not easy to find books from the countries left...

Claire (clairemcalpine) | 168 comments Is Egypt (Middle East) eligible?
If so The Woman from Tantoura by Radwa Ashour, translated by Kay Heikkinen set in Palestine.

Wow that's difficult! Apparently Egypt is in both Asia and Africa... but Palestine is in Asia so I will add it.

Agreed, I'm glad we've read from so many countries, but maybe we will revisit the continent caveat for nominations since we had such a hard time this round.
