Laura Bray (laura_bray) | 1 comments Would give it 4.5 stars if I could. (I'm pretty stingy with my 5*****). Stretched my horizons a bit and picked up this historical fiction by an author I was unaware of. This was fabulous. Told from the point of view of a young slave, he used dialect amazingly well, and that is really difficult to do and still sound authentic. My only complaint is that the battle scenes (of which there were many) were a little *too* detailed for me and got old after a bit.

Going to put some of his other books on my "to read" list.

Carly Friedman (carlykayreads) | 10 comments Yes! I adore James McBride and have read several of his books. Song Yet Sung is my favorite novel and of course The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother is amazing.
