Elizabeth (Alaska) Edith Newbold Jones was born into such wealth and privilege that her family inspired the phrase "keeping up with the Joneses." The youngest of three children, Edith spent her early years touring Europe with her parents and, upon the family's return to the United States, enjoyed a privileged childhood in New York and Newport, Rhode Island. Edith's creativity and talent soon became obvious: By the age of eighteen she had written a novella, (as well as witty reviews of it) and published poetry in the Atlantic Monthly.

This is from Wharton's GR author page, and there is a lot more.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I know my favorite is The Age of Innocence, one of my favorite books of all time. I also rated her Ethan Frome 5-stars. I feel it's almost hard to go wrong with her, but not everyone can hit a winner every time, so maybe I just haven't come across a clunker (although The House of Mirth was not to my taste).

Do you have a favorite?

Tawallah | 447 comments I have read the same books and my current order of ranking from best to good
1. Ethan Frome
2. The Age of Innocence
3. The House of Mirth.

And this is a reminder to pick up more of Edith Wharton’s books. I really enjoy her writing style and wit.

Valerie Brown | 3322 comments I think Edith Wharton is great. What I most appreciate about her books is that there is a gritty backbone to them. I suppose given the time she was writing in and her personal background had me suspecting she would be writing fluffy stories about the upper crust. Now, when I pick up a Wharton I enjoy them a lot, but I often have a 'feeling in the pit of my stomach' that something bad is going to happen.

I've read:
The Age of Innocence
Ethan Frome (btw - the movie was excellent too)
Summer - this is my least favorite so far
Bunner Sisters - short but intense
