The book discussion for July 2020 is Witchy by Ariel Slamet Ries.



"In the witch kingdom Hyalin, the strength of your magic is determined by the length of your hair. Those that are strong enough are conscripted by the Witch Guard, who enforce the law in peacetime and protect the land during war. However, those with hair judged too long are pronounced enemies of the kingdom, and annihilated."

1. Nyneve uses magic to hide the true length of her hair. Why is she so anxious to let others know the extent of her magic? Should she have hidden her secret from Prill and Mongke? Why or why not?

2. On pages 104 - 106 Viceroy Jinheung Nyoto Jung publicly reveals Nyneve’s secret. What are the ramifications of his actions? Why do you think he chose to expose her secret this way?

3. Nyneve’s mother, Veda Ahmadzai, is more than she appears to be. What do we know about her past? Why do you think she hid it from Nyneve?

4. On page 208, Nyneve explains her skepticism about the library to Banana saying, “Just because it’s in a book doesn’t mean it’s true.” What do you think about this statement? If you cannot trust everything you read, what can you do to test the accuracy of a book/article/etc.?
