"Relax", said the night man; “We are programmed to receive. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.” – The Eagles, Hotel California
Ethan Burke is a Secret Service Agent sent to Wayward Pines, Idaho, to find two missing agents. When he gets there, he is immediately involved in car crash and wakes up disoriented. His wallet and identification have vanished. During his investigation, he encounters people and situations that feel off-kilter. Burke soon finds himself in danger and running for his life. He desperately needs to solve the mystery of what is going on before it is too late.
This book is a thriller with lots of action and suspense. The tone is dark and menacing. The reader will feel Burke’s confusion, as it will not initially be evident what is happening in this creepy little town. There are a number of plot twists that flow into the storyline. The ending is definitely not what I expected, but it made sense and I found it satisfying.
I am not normally a big fan of thrillers, and usually pick them up for group reads. I have previously read and enjoyed both Dark Matter and Recursion. I have found I can count on Blake Crouch to come up with an intelligent story with an ample dose of science, usually involving memory and time.
