Finished!

Much to my surprise, I quiet enjoyed reading this book. There is a lot of history here, and there is even more family drama. The family drama was a bit over the top, and some of the grudges that characters held against each other weren't very realistic, but I quite enjoyed the ride.

Well...all in all I really enjoyed this story!! I was surprised how quickly the chapters and story passed by. I agree there seems to be a lot of drama but I found it engaging and for the most part I cared what happened in each scenario. I think I’ll continue on with the trilogy but maybe not right away. This might be a 2021 reading plan.

This book turned out to be just an "ok" read for me. It was interesting to learn some of the history of these years leading up to the Civil War, but I didn't feel especially invested in any of the characters. I wish the story would have focused more on the characters of Orry and George and not so much on all of the other characters, although I understand the need to have lots of characters if a huge trilogy was being planned. It did intrigue me enough to buy the miniseries DVDs from Amazon. It will be fun to rewatch the first series in the trilogy now that I have read it, and I'm interested to see what happens in the next book (although not enough to actually read it; maybe if they weren't so long!). I read in the Amazon reviews that the third part of the miniseries is not good, so not sure if I'll watch that part.

Very much enjoyed this book. Many years ago I watched the miniseries and while reading the book I could "see" Patrick Swayze and Leslie-Anne Down in my mind. I will continue on with the series.

I enjoyed this book, but I don’t think I’m going to continue the series. I think I’ll just watch the miniseries to find out what happens 😂 I liked the history and how it interweaved with the story of the two families. I did think the drama was a bit much sometimes, and by the end I was kind of glad it was over 😬 Though I liked the characters, I think by the end I had just tired of it lol. So it’s not a bad book, but I didn’t love it either. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first book club read! I hope you had fun and will join us in October for our next pick! 😊

I enjoyed this book. I read it on my kindle along with listening to the audiobook. I haven’t decided yet if I will continue the series but most likely will just at a later date.
