Blue (view spoiler)[Definitely rougher and more aggressive. At first I feel like she was enjoying playing cat and mouse with Red in a more malicious sort of way, but then ended up falling in love. (hide spoiler)]

Red (view spoiler)[ I was amused at how verbose she was compared to Blue and the fact that she even pointed out her ramblings and that she should probably make her letters shorter. This became important and touching when Blue said she missed Red's long letters (hide spoiler)]

I've worried over that since finishing. It could be true, but also be true that they were equally in love, but loyalty to faction won out. (hide spoiler)]

I think the ending solidified that (view spoiler)[the love had become genuine - Blue willing to die for Red. Red willing to sacrifice everything to resurrect Blue. At that point I think we saw loyalty completely shift to each other instead of the factions.

But,then again, it does leave it open ended - what happens when Red breaks out and meets back up with Blue? Is it a trap?

I tend to see the bleak in books, as opposed to the joy. Did you read The Road? I was the only person in my book club that thought the ending was not a HAPPY one!

I did read The Road - it has been many years, so I don't remember specifics, but I do remember thinking the ending was bleak and not happy.

The ending of the road destroyed me, read it over 10 years ago and I will never forget that book

I thought (view spoiler)[ the family that found the boy after the man's death were going to eat him. I mean how does a family of four and a dog survive, in pretty good health at that, unless they have resorted to cannibalism? They waited until the man died to approach the boy so they could eat the man right away and the boy would be easier to subdue.
