Okay great! I wanted to participate in Brideshead Revisited and There Will Come soft rains first and in the middle of a couple of others so the second half works well for me.
I will start reading during the next couple of days. Since I'll be on holiday (against all Covid odds), my reading progress will be really slow.

I am also a slow reader. I am looking forward to read this book ( actually I wanted to read The Greenlanders but let that be later). So I will be starting tomorrow.😀
I‘ve just read chapter 3 and found it hilarious that they ordered a house building kit with 76 pages of instruction like today one would buy an IKEA bookcase.
I remember when you could buy a home in the Sears catalog. It was before my time but people would talk about it. When I was in realestate I came across a couple. They seemed to hold up well. I liked that she incorporated that into the story
I'm up to chapter 18. I can't say that I'm loving it. It's hard when you love King Lear so much. That was action-packed and this is so plodding. I've appreciated the effort to put a back story behind it and love some scenes (like the Monopoly game). I also really loved the opening and the descriptions of the farm. One thing that is bugging me is that she's making the Cordelia character (Caroline) seem to have only a superficial love of her father. In King Lear, her love for her father was strong.
I've read up to the first chapter of Book Two. So far, I like it, I think. I love the family dynamics. Sadly, I had no idea of the plot of King Lear and had to look it up on Wikipedia...
I wanted to read this just generally for my Pulitzer Challenge and because I like family sagas.
Now, though, it's got a whole new level of meaning. So please, keep pointing out the parallels and differences to King Lear.
I will Philina. I almost wish I hadn't known about it being a retelling of King Lear. It made my expectations too high.
I finished and since I really didn't care for it, I'm going to refrain from further comment. I hate it when I don't like a buddy read book. I know others have liked this. I hope you guys do too.

Don't feel alone, I did not like this one either.

Agreed.
Agreed.
Hello everyone!I haven’t continued reading since my last post. :-(
I‘m on holiday and we‘re so terribly busy.
I am also not able to keep the pace. In India the new session for school starts in June so I have to attend online classes and meetings for my 6 year old. But I like the flow of language in this book so I will be continuing reading however slow it is.
I returned home last week and will now hopefully have more time for reading paper books again. In the story, Ginny has just slept with Jess. I wasn't surprised. It was extra heavily foreshadowed. I wonder if she will become pregnant. All the talk about her miscarriages foreshadows a pregnancy, in my opinion. Now she had sex with her husband and with Jess.
I still find the book more or less boring and really cannot put the finger on why.

Everybody is welcome!
