I'm going to be honest, I find Mulan overrated...like, there are tons of other Asian myths that could bring a lot more diverse representation. Besides, Mulan is only this big because it was made into an (innacurate) Disney movie. Just saying, she wasn't a princess or a myth, she was a real woman, and there are a lot of better Asian fairy tales/myths out there.
Yeah I never really cared for the animated version. But I'm really looking forward to the live action one, it looks great.

was it The Wrath and The Dawn?
(that's a Thousand and One Nights retelling by the way, maybe we should have a topic for that?? It's not a very big fairy tale though)

I loooove Sharazad! She's a literal queen!
The Disney version is super inaccurate, basically a completely different story. But Pocahontas was a real person.

I'm pretty sure the "real" Pocahontas didn't sing a song every five minutes, but I could be wrong XD

Hahaha, yessssssss
I'm actually pretty hyped for Upside Down Magic to come out on Disney. I swear if there are songs.....

I think so..Well not exactly, but I'm sure there are retellings, I still have to create a topic for that.

Has anyone read defy? it's kind of the retelling of Mulan but it's more about a girl becoming a male soldier to protect herself.

Apparently, Spin the Dawn is a retelling of Mulan!
I didn't know that. I wasn't planning on reading the book, but now I'm curious.
I was looking forward to The Warrior Maiden by Melanie Dickerson, but it was a let down for me.

Yes, I didn't care for The Warrior Maiden that much. Though Mulan has never really been a favourite for me anyway.
Who's it by?"
The book defy is by Sara B. Larson

I was thinking of reading Defy but then I found out that there's a love triangle in it...so I didn't read it. I'm still curious though. (I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to love triangles, I don't like if it gets heartbreaking.
Although some book series I've read, the odd one out found his love match in next installment, if you know what I mean. That I don't mind. :)

(Spoiler) yeah maybe you won't like the Defy series since the man who isn't chosen gets killed in the last book of the series. Although it was for the war the three were fighting against it is still very sad.

No problem! I too don't like sad romance books it's so heart breaking. That's why I kind of skimmed the last book of the series.

Same here, the love triangle has to be written really well, otherwise forget it!

Thank you for including the covers! That makes my life so much easier when I can just click on the cover and it just takes me to the book. Besides, looking at pretty book covers always makes my heart happy.
The warrior maiden from Melanie Dickerson. That's the only one I've ever read.
Me too. I'm rereading that now, actually. I'd been considering reading the live-action novelization, after reading the Aladdin one, but then I decided the Warrior Maiden is still probably better. (I'm not a fan of the spirit animals and stuff)I believe K.M. Shea is planning on doing one eventually, though. She said something on her blog about another continent where she'll do Mulan and a few others, since it doesn't fit the culture of her currently existing countries. But it'll be a LONG time... Not until after Angelique's series is done, and the fifth one isn't expected to be out until 2025. It's torture, I tell you! Torture!
Ooo, If K. M. Shea dose one I want in on it! Urg, why, why must writing, editing, and publishing take so long!!!!!
